ATR ever again?

They could make a sprint run of the Ti PE version with a modern supersteel and I bet they'd sell out in a day.

It'd sell but not that fast due to the price. Let's say a run of 800 with full titanium and S90V. That'd be a street price closer to $300!

I would prefer a stainless steel run, with a vg-10 blade. I had a black stainless serrated one, turns out serrations just don't duo it for me. But I think the ATR would be a great user, and I couldn't bring myself to use a $300 knife (or one I can sell for %100 profit like you can if you find one from any of the original runs at original price)

My local knife store had ATR's in stock for a long time and ,like an idiot, I let the opportunity go by. If it's ever offered again I'd snap it up . It has to be one of Spyderco's funkiest looking folders.

I own 2x a Black SS PE that was my EDC for 9 years and a Ti PE that gets carried when dressed although my GB might take that honor soon. I would buy another.

i asked about the ATR on the spyderco meet in amsterdam 2014. sal said they were having issues making the handles thus most like not going to make ATR in the near future.

What kind of issues? It is confusing to hear this since they made them before. Weird.

I paid from 70 to 161 for these each.

I have a black one that I enjoy carrying every now and then. My only complaint is the pocket clip. The contact area between the clip and my pocket is very large which makes it a small chore to clip and unclip the knife to and from my pocket. I doubt it will ever fall out of my pocket, though.

I'm liking the Mike Read PITS.

Very nice Jill. Thanx fer sharin'.

When I first designed the model back in the late 90's, I felt that I had created something unique and highly functional with all of these innovations (Integral Compression lock, overtravel stop {inside the scale}, cobra hood, rotation clip, etc). Probably al little "too much about myself". :o

The Titan version was very difficult to make. It sold farely well and we couldn't keep up with demand, but the vendor we were working with said it was too hard to make. We then made the Stainless version in Seki. They did a good job and it's a nice piece, but sales were slow and we disco'ed the model.

There has been some renewed interest in a sprint but I'd want to make some changes. The clip had more disadvantages than advantages. The Cobra hood is still in question and would at the very least have to be a bit narrower and smoother to not accidentally "Emerson open" the knife.

I'm also open to suggestions.

People just want a "frame compression lock" in my opinion

Make a ti lock side para 2 with some super steel; sprint, 2000 pieces or so

I don't think this would take a huge tooling restructure, and would be a much more feasible, and if warranted sustainable change

If the dodo came back, I know this can happen too!

I really hope you don't use the Para 2 frame. One of my favorite things about the ATR was that it was big enough to accommodate large hands (unlike the para, in my experience).

Give it the Spyderco treatment: upgraded (maybe cts) steel, deeper carry clip (wire ?), and a full flat ground blade (keep the original shape maybe).

I would prefer stainless for cost, but titanium with a hardened lock bar would be cool too.

Having never handled one, take this for what it's worth, but I think it can do without the "cobra hood". The clip does look strange, but again I've never had one in my pocket. As for the handle, as long as it's metal I'm in. Titanium, stainless steel, even aluminum if that's even possible with an integral lock (I'm guessing not). I really like the blade shape, and I might even be able to live with the sabre grind over a full flat. Whatever it takes, I want one!

Nooo not me. I'm more about the full metal construction. The unique lock is a bonus though.

Keep it the same size and all metal construction. Lose the hood and get a more comfortable clip although I really like the way the holes in the clip line up with the frame since it's a nice aesthetic and design element. Blade shape should remain the same but open to different grind like FFG although as is the tip is stronger. Perhaps make the frame more rounded and the titanium finish like the PITS. Titanium a must but open to Ergal aluminum and even the heavier SS.

I actually liked the cobra hood a lot. I think it's a natural continuation of the spyder hole. It definitely ensures ease of opening. I think as Sal said it could be a little less wide.

Because the clip had such a long contact area, it stuck out if clipped on thicker pants. At least in my very little experience with it.

I love the blade shape, the lock mechanism, and handle construction. As far as metal constructions, I'd buy whatever is offered. The cobra hood and clip don't matter much to me. I would be all over the opportunity to buy one of these!

Hi Tricker,

the term "Frame-lock" was created because makers didn't want to say Chris Reeve's "Integral lock". (which I believe Chris trademarked). We just call them "RIL" or Reeve Integral lock. We've been calling the the integral compression lock an integral compression lock.

On a para version, we have a proto that is very nice. It would be all new tooling, but it's on a back burner due to capacity issues at this time. Golden factory is being enlarged and we should be able to get it to a front burner next year. We'd probably do a sprint ATR in Seki.

The Dodo was very inconvenient to "squeeze in".

I had one for a while (the Ti version) and eventually sold it. There was a lot of pleasure in handling the knife but not a lot in carrying or using it. I am probably not telling you anything you don't already know, but the clip was uncomfortable when using the knife and too large when carrying the knife. I had several accidental openings when the Cobrahood acted like a Wave opener. That's a lot of very sharp steel to have pop open unexpectedly. :o :)

I agree with Tricker that maybe a solution to some of what you're hearing could be satisfied with an integral compression lock Para2. My only suggestion on that one would be to make sure you ship it in January or February because they'll leave your plant so fast that you may start a fire or two if you don't ship them while there's snow on the ground.

Edit - I see your reply to Tricker. Makes sense...

I'd love to see a sprint run of ATRs, but if it means the cobra hood will go away then that just makes me happier that I have one of the old ones.

I'm sure an integral version of the para would be quite popular, but it would leave those of us that aren't fans of that particular model with an itch that still needs scratching.

Cool, thanks for the insight, Sal!

As for suggestions, a Ti version (in black perhaps?) with the same lock and design, and a modern super steel would be amazing. CTS-XHP perhaps?? ;)

A ti/integrated compression lock Para2 is a dream come true for me! :D Put some M4 in it and whoa!!!!!

I wonder if it would be Titanium or Stainless Steel?

The Integral Compression Lock Para that we have is Ti. On the ATR, we'ved not decided what to make it out of. Still discussing with the maker.
