ATR ever again?

The Integral Compression Lock Para that we have is Ti. On the ATR, we'ved not decided what to make it out of. Still discussing with the maker.

How about something different like 7075 Aluminum which is light and very strong? LionSteel makes a version of their SR-1 & SR-2 with 7075 AL and it's actually an aluminum frame lock with a lock bar steel insert for steel on steel contact with the blade.

I guess the blade steel would depend on where you'll be manufacturing it?

I have two ATRs, the Ti PE and the SS serrated edge. The clip is stiff and can be difficult to draw the knife without giving myself a wedgie. I love the blade: it's both gorgeous and functional.

I'd rather have a tip down design because I like to open Spyderco-hole knives with the Spyder flip.

The compression lock is really strong because the handles are so thick.

The cobra hood makes the knife a little easier to open and makes for a super secure thumb ramp.

I'd hate to see a lot of changes, but a higher end blade steel would be nice.

One feature that has always baffled me is the little raised rivet that rises out of the inside of the lockbar, a little above the relief. I cannot figure out what function it is supposed to fill.

Sal, I'd love to see an ATR sprint. Any steel. But PLEASE keep the cobra hood...that's part of the knife's character. Would any future release be FFG or continue the saber grind?

Are you talking about the overtravel stop?

I'm also open to suggestions.

I absolutely *adore* the idea of an integral compression lock, but I would love to see one with more of a "classic" spyderco shape. The upcoming para-2 model certainly fits this need, but something with a bit more of a leaf shape would be incredibly awesome too. One thought that immediately comes to mind is the Domino/Dice - would the geometry work to offer integral compression lock versions of these? It seems to me like the flipper should be able to clear the lock if it's released, similar to how a blade clears the RIL.

The combination of a flipper + an integral compression lock, on a great, classic Spyderco leaf shaped blade, might just be the most awesome convergence of knife innovations ever created.

No, as far as I can tell it serves no function. It's a raised rivet on the inside of the lockbar. It doesn't contact anything, whether the blade is opened or closed. It looks like it must be a press fit. Nothing shows through to the other side (the outside) of the lockbar.

Here's a shot of it:

I take it back, Amflud. It is an over stop. I couldn't see what it was doing until I took the knife apart. It prevents the lockbar from overextending.

This photo shows the over stop pin. It also shows the cool design of the internal stop that turns the lockbar into a sandwich.

Ok. I just went and checked my black stainless one and was just about to reply saying the placement is the same as the OTS on mine.

Nice pic. First time I've seen one taken apart.

I don't mean to be too over excited , but if you chose to make a sprint ATR when would a projected sale date be? I've acquired all of the knives that I have interest at this point so I'm spending money elsewhere, but I want to have money ready when the opportunity arises

I'd be happy with a release in any version. I'm not picky. I also agree on keeping the Cobra Hood, IMO it's part of the identity. SS handles and VG10, PE and SE. Plus it would keep costs down. That doesn't mean I'm opposed to any other version. It would be nice just to get one in the hand again.

Sal, hearing that an ATR sprint is being discussed is fantastic news! Since you mentioned that you are open to suggestions I thought I would throw in my two cents.
-Keep the Cobra hood but refine it. I think it's part of this knifes charm but accidental openings can be bad. Safety first!
-Change the clip to the standard hour glass or wire clip (preferably the wire clip :)
-VG-10 for the win.
-Stainless steel liners if it gets it to us faster. Titanium if possible.
-Keep the holes in the liner! A must!
-Keep the blade shape as is and go with a plain edge.
-Offer it in black if possible!

Thank you!

I would guess it's at least a year out if it does happen...

I love the idea of sprint ATR.
I used to have SS PE variant and liked it a lot. never carried for two reasons:a clip and SS handle.
If clip will be replaced with standard it is good, low riding wire clip even better. Cobra hood is not a deal breaker for me, but I like it a lot and prefer to have it. G10 scales with holes through liners as well will be great. Dark green G10 and ZDP blade will be icing on the cake. :)

I'll be THAT guy

Could we possibly see pics of the integral PM2?

I think I know the answer, but its worth it

Oh Man! A ZDP blade with Titanium handles and a polished clip?! That would be my grail knife.

Same here. Sal, we trust you.

I still carry a Ti ATR often. The clip was a easy fix as I just ground down the underside mostly near the top toward the screws. I do remember Sal saying they lost a bit of money on each Ti sold..but man would I like the two different upgraded versions.

1-Ti with maybe S110v and Dark Blue Anodized scales..something upgraded as the Ti was like a flagship model.
2-I'm open to whatever Spyderco can come up with to upgrade the Stainless..maybe with a Navy G-10?? and ? steel everyone wants Im game.

I'm def interested in an ATR sprint. However I think some of the steels just mentioned kind of go against its personality, which seems to me to be ready for anything? So, I would think something tougher and easy to sharpen would be preferable. Obviously the whole Japanese steel selection thing applies, so that somewhat limits the options. VG-10, as always, is a decent compromise. However, being a sprint we could get fancy. Superblue anyone? At The Rusty.?
