Im a cop in NYPD and honestly we will use ANY knife clipped to your pants as an excuse for a stop question and frisk... most of the times we think the person might be wanted etc its not usually used (at least by me) to mess with people honestly any knife not on an exposed holster is a concealed weapon and an easy ticket for a rookie cop

we use it the same way we pull over for tinted windows or loud exhaust or not making a full stop... not really stopping for that just using that as a way to question and possibly have you incriminate yourself or find something on you

again cops can use this to be a jerk or only use it to get criminals off the street its up to the cops morals
Wow that's profiling also you can't detain someone unless they've committed a crime or you have reasonable suspicion of them committing a crime. I'm not familiar with NYC knife laws unless the act of carrying a knife is illegal then you have no reasonable suspicion. It's crap like this as to why people don't like cops. Where I live I can legally carry and conceal a knife no larger than 3.5 inches. The cop can't just stop me to measure my knife either because if he seen the knife and is questioning it then obviously it was not concealed.

Can't imagine being stuck in N.Y.C. to begin with!! Surprised one is allowed to breathe in that dump. Sounds like a place one would need a knife for protection for sure. Usually the case in places like N.Y.

Maybe look up the law before making a broad sweeping comment ?

First off i retired years ago and now live in Florida,

If the knife is inside the pocket and only the clip is showing then in NYC that is considered concealed and was illegal ( in 2011)
also if you read the thread you would have seen this post
It would be best to keep it inside your pocket. I had lunch yesterday with a Deputy Chief of the NYPD ( and old friend and former co worker), and after complaining about women, taxes and all else, I talked knife law with him. He made it clear there was a zero tolerance for any knife carry and officers are told to make an arrest without many exceptions. I discussed the construction workers arrests, and he clearly understood why they happened and felt the officers were following their instructions. The one other guy with us at lunch is a building manager who had a leatherman on his belt under his suit jacket. He asked the Chief if that was illegal to carry that way and the responses was there some officers that would arrest you....When it comes to knives I would stay away from carrying one in NYC. I had invited him out to lunch to celebrate his second marriage, so I was treating, but I asked him if he knew the one and only time a non LEO could carry a switchblade or gravity knife and bet him the costs of lunch...He had no clue about the fishing/hunting/tracking exception. I still paid for lunch, but my point is the NYPD stops reading section 265.20 of the PL right after they understand they can carry what they want. They do not read what you can legally do, and they don't seems to care....Things have changed since my day for sure...

Also Stop and frisk was a BS law and it was deemed unconstitutional by the supreme court and repealed like a decade ago
why dig up a 13+yr old post and take offense to it??

many many laws have changed in NY since then including the repeal of the ban on gravity knives
take 5 min and google nyc knife laws instead of quoting a 13yr old post

this is from NYC.gov
New York City law prohibits carrying a knife that can be seen in public, including wearing a knife outside of your clothing. This applies to all knives, even if the blade is not exposed. When any portion of the knife is visible, such as the clip, hinge or top, this is considered in public view.
here are the NY knife laws

New York City law prohibits carrying a knife that can be seen in public, including wearing a knife outside of your clothing. This applies to all knives, even if the blade is not exposed. When any portion of the knife is visible, such as the clip, hinge or top, this is considered in public view. This rule does not apply to those who carry knives for work that customarily requires the use of such knife, members of the military, or on-duty ambulance drivers and EMTs while engaged in the performance of their duties.

New York City also prohibits the possession in public of a knife with a blade that is 4 or more inches regardless of whether any part of the knife, including the blade, is visible or concealed. This rule does not apply to those who carry knives for work that customarily requires the use of such knife, members of the military, or on-duty ambulance drivers and EMTs while engaged in the performance of their duties.
Even if you are only carrying a knife for self-defense, you may still be subject to summons and/or arrest if the circumstances indicate that the knife is used or possessed as a weapon. If you feel threatened or in danger, call 911 for police assistance.
maybe next time use google before being hostile with someone especially when they aren't even a cop anymore
