Back from my winter overnight...it was a llot of fun. there was about 4-6 inches of snow on the ground and ALLOT of ice which made the short hike in take a little longer than it should have. We chose one f the many pre-made shelters within the area for ease of use.. It was fairly cold. the temps range from about 25 during the day to about 15 at night....one of the disadvantages of using a public shelter was that most of the nearby wood had been burned for about 1/4 mile in every direction...So we spent most of the day gathering fire wood..

once we got the fire going I realized that my legs where cold..reaching into my "rain gear" I realized that my jeans (my only pair) where soaking wet...apparently foul weather gear I got for Christmas are only water resistant...so I stripped to my Long johns and hung the jeans by the fire.. shortly after my jeans burst into flames...one of my friends through an accelerent on the fire and apparently moust if got some on my pants..as I have never seen ringing wet fabric burn like that...LOL

any way a good time was had by all here are some pics

Sorry for the long post...just learning how to post pics

hey John, looks like a great overnighter, despite the pants!

i suppose its like they say...don't wear fancy pants when bushcrafting!

how is that norse hawk treating you? i saw your thread in the hawks section, and i'm curious to hear your thoughts on it...

Looks like a great trip. I try to avoid jeans in the outdoors - just very difficult to dry.
Also, thats a pretty cool hat - I think I have the exact same one!

Thanks Guys... THe norse hawk was great...I thinned the edge down a it when I first got it...and it's quite the cutter now.. most of the chopping was limbs about arm thick, and it breezed through them.. it also did a fairly good job splitting do to the long handle. II also used it with a baton and it worked eve better, usually splitting the wood entirely by the time I batoned it down to the eye. I also choked up on it a bit to rough out the handle of the spoon. Great tool over all. I'll be making a sheath for it in the near future.

I'm sorry John, but thats freaking Histerical!!!!!!! I am still laughing as I can picture you sitting there by the campfire in your long johns watching your jeans go up in flames!!!!!!!!

I wish someone got video of that!

Anyway, great pics and I am sure you had a great time despite your new drafty jeans!

Must have had one hell of a time trying to put it out! Great pictures of your outing  . I have never seen someone use a tube and glass to stoke the coals to make a spoon like you did. Very clever!

Looks like you had a good time and proved that anything can happen. Great to see how easily you adapted and overcame.

How is that Norse treating you?......

I second that question.

*edit* nevermind... I just read the reply above.

Rick

Thanks for the kind words everyone... It was a good time... I got to say I panicked a bit when I realized how wet my pants had gotten.. I panicked even more when I saw them enveloped in flame....but I laughed through it all..
Rick, thanks for the compliment and thanks for recommending the Norse Hawk. it's great!

PS I just ordered a pair of Marmot rain pants...(fool me once.....)

safetyman, Thanks for the Compliment..the tube is plastic.. but the shiny part is not glass it's actuall a radio antenna I got from radio shack.. it's expandable so I can use it to blow coals in the fire pit with out singing my eyebrows.

They say that in foul weather “Cottons Kills”…you’re lucky you weren’t wearing those flaming jeans.

Looks like a good time anyway.

sorry to hear about your misfortune bud ... still funny as hell
So its true you can fix anything with duct tape huh ... nice patch job on the jeans.

They say..."duct tape is like the Force.. it has a light side, a dark side and it holds the universe together" LOL
