Back to the 2016 Forum Knife: The punch!

Nice punch ! So useful, especially this beefy looking one.
Good to go in my books.

The heavier style punch looks very sturdy and useful. Question: would a thicker punch cause any problems with the manufacture if we're selecting a single spring knife?

Shaggy brings up an interesting point, sorta. will the thickness make this more of a nail breaker on a single spring? i honestly don't know, maybe some of you old-timers ( those with more experience i mean ) could chime in on this, please, 'cause it seems like a good question.
thanks, Neal

Width doesn't control the strength of a spring completely.
I have seen very wide springs, 4 or 5 times as wide as knife springs, in wind-up toys! You can thin down a spring until it offers very little resistance, yet it can remain quite wide.
Besides the composition and temper of the spring's steel, both thickness and width will determine performance.

Hey all- am I seeing things correctly or not? The suggested punch is really close to the ones that were put on the #15 HJ version? I'm hoping so, that is my favorite version I have so far, very versitile.

I am a big fan of the punch also... Like others have said before the ones on the 15 are my favorite

thanks Charlie, i hadn't really thought about it that way, but that's a very good analogy. total confidence restored :D (not that it was ever lost). i'm really happy so many folks seem to like and be behind this style of punch-it's exactly the type for which i'd hoped.
thanks, Neal

I liked the punch very much, but...the pull on mine was around 15 (). Maybe just an anomaly. Ouch!
A change-up from the 15 would ratchet up the anticipation.

I don't have a picture handy, but how does it differ from the punch on Case's current offering? I'm seeing flat on one side, beveled and swedged on the other.
For the record, I'm in.

Exactly what came to mind when I saw Charlie's knife. And ditto. :D

Case's "wedge" punch, on the 6318PU (the blades are CV yet the punch is SS):

On further review, the new Case punch is a teeeeensy bit wider at the base, it seems.
