Bad Kershaw. Bad!

Entry level is just that, entry level. Many here now discussing the finer points of steel, HT and edge angle started the same way. If these start people on the path, that's ok with me, even if they are not for me.

So has anyone here talking about how crappy this steel is ever owned a kershaw with the 3cr? Just curious because it isnt as bad as everyone is saying. I bought one at Christmas for my buddy and he loves it. It is by no means a "super steel" but it gets the job done. I sharpen it up for him every couple of weeks and it will get stupid sharp. And it keeps a decent working edge too.

I bought a Kershaw Shuffle that's the 3Cr13 version simply because it was at Walmart for $14, and was a Kershaw, which I love. It's a nice little package, I don't use the blade to the point I've had to sharpen it yet but I haven't cut anything very heavy admittedly. It's a great bottle opener though :) Honestly I find the "Duck" marketing more of a turn off than the crappy steel. All that said, now that I know so much more about knives, I wouldn't get another knife with 3Cr but I don't hate it on my shuffle. ymmv.

I have the Shuffle, Starter, and Manifold in that steel, plus another that I can't recall right now. Only used them very little though, cut a couple zip ties, opened an envelope or 2, nothing serious so can't say how it holds up long term.

My take on this is translated loosely as "KAI/ZT don't need official forums on here, the ZT fanboys keep things going hot and heavy without it."

Yep. And they do.

ZT has a lot of fanboys, but it's not for no reason.

Also, I didn't get too bent outta shape when I read duder's comment. I actually laughed out loud. It's true! (The ZT fanboy fellatio exchange)

Look, if selling 500k of these Duck Commander knives at Wally World and other places that like to peddle Duck Dynasty stuff makes knives like the 0454 possible, then I'm all for it.

The buyer of these isn't going to care about the steel, just as the average knife buyer doesn't care. It only seems to be an issue to the internet forum metallurgists.

Although I love Kershaw I don't own any ZTs...

I do sort of get it, although I'd phrase it better.

There do seem to be an inordinate amount of people who are true ZT fanboys who take personal offense if anyone doesn't like ZT. Once someone says "I don't like this knife," some people take it as a personal insult to their honor.

That said it surely isn't a ZT exclusive thing, although I do see it more with ZT.

Kershaw is probably my favorite but I don't get bent out of shape if it doesn't work for others.

Just didn't think this was a very good thing to say, particularly in that way.

Because the truth hurts!

Well, having a hostile fanbase here didn't help any.

Bottom line, as many mentioned these are entry level knives. The steel used performs better than needed for most people who aren't performing heavy-duty tasks. If you are regularly beating the snot out of your edge, consider a US made Kershaw or ZT, of which there are many to choose from.

Oh I know, I know. It was kinda blunt, and a little crude for sure, but I laughed!

This stuff is physically incapable of hitting 60RC, it's like putting the name of a sports car on a wagon.
Yes, I'm biased with this stuff and yes, RC isn't everything, but this is just demeaning.

Kershaw, meet CRKT, SOG, and the zombie over there named Camillus. Have fun making crappy knives together.

Whether or not they have terrible products in their line-up matters to me because I can tell anyone on the street "buy Spyderco, just pick one, they're all good". I used to be able to do that with Kershaw, but I guess times change.

Well it really hasn;t changed, as we can all agree these are entry level knives but... you can modify it a little: Buy Kershaw, any model will be good except the ones with ducks on em."

As with all consumer products, it's up to you to do your own research before purchasing. People who buy these either don't know or don't care that it's low quality steel. There's not much more conversation to be had.

Yet again, not every knife is designed for the high end collector. These knives are obviously designed as entry level knives. In case you are not aware, a production knife company like Kershaw does quite a lot of business through big box stores.

I could really care less what Kershaw does but I was simply defending the OP's right to discuss it.

Kershaw now makes worse knives than Cold Steel... I never thought I would hear those words in that order, let alone coming from me.

Tons of companies make worse knives than Cold Steel and not only that, their whole lineup could be considered worse... These, at least, if they are worse, are a small, small part of their overall inventory.
