Bails and Chains

Glad to see this thread still living as I have really come to enjoy these knives with chains. I hope to see more folks post pictures as the cooler temperatures arrive and perhaps wear these more. Just recently purchased this slip and it has really been a game changer in carrying this knife. Much more comfortable. That along with the chain that I added have made this a daily favorite. The chain was a necklace that my mother wore when she was alive. IMG_4526.PNG

I know the thread is old, but still... It seems like that bail is sitting just in the cover material, not in the liners. Is that correct? And if it is, is there a possibility that bail will eventually cause cracks on bone covers, if the knife will be, for example, pulled out of the pocket by the chain every day?

So its drilled thru to the liners. however the bail itself does not extend past the liners and does not affect the blade. Not really, its difficult to see it happening. Ive seen more folks damage the bone on their charlie's special with removing the bail. The stress points in the bail do not actually interact with the bone or micarta unless you are pulling it out. I was able to remove it from my smooth bone a long time ago without issue.

Yup, NOT through-liner design. Also, the bails I’ve had are quite springy and stay in place. Mind you, I’m not crawling around much anymore and haven’t really tried to catch anything with the loose dangling chain. I’ll add that these can be modified to length quite easily. My GEC 15s were a bargain because of these often disliked features. I grabbed four in total, my avatar :D two ebonies, and an antique yellow jig bone:) the three retain their B&C’s.

Uhm, so what is real, guys?

these can be modified to length quite easily

Haven't though of that, thanks!

So the bail is not touching the covers in holes while it moves, right? I.e. holes are a bit bigger then the bail ends, and those ends are inserted into the liners? So it is through-liner design?... I am confused. :D

Simple to see, somewhat difficult to explaino_O
The bail’s ends are smaller than the scales/covers holes and moving back and forth may lightly rub the outer scales/covers. The bail’s ends do touch the scales/covers in their holes. The bail’s ends do not go through the liners towards the blade, although there are smaller holes in the liners themselves. Hope that helps.

Thanks! Now it is clear.

So bail's ends are being holded by liners? Great! Big thanks for the explanation!

Hey John, think of it like this....
Largest hole is on the scale, smallest hole (which seems inactive) is on the liner. The bail’s ends go through the scales probably touching the liners, yet on mine (avatar) they didn’t go through the blade well. I’ll try and get a pic later with more light. Very cloudy and foggy up here today.

Thanks for the reply. :)
That seems like a silly design though. Not sure I'd trust the bone to be strong enough to hold the bail through any kind of abuse. I've seen and had old knives with a bail through the bolster, and the bolster steel was deformed. Hate to see what bone would look like after that.

Oh I’ve yanked the chain plenty on the micarta, with no issue. The bail is also very springy, it doesn’t really stretch when forced by hard pulls etc. Now, I’m sure I can stretch it open or closed if I put in a vice. My bone example has be scrubbed by the bail, smoothens the bone out is all.

Then why there are holes in liners if the bail ends are not inserted there?...

Here ya go fellas, forgive the random vinyl sleeve background. The best I can do today.

Thank you very much! So one actually can insert some thin lanyard there instead of bail. Nice!

I don’t know why those holes are in the liners, with seemingly no purpose. I’ll tell ya that for myself, wanting nothing on my micarta version, the bail was removed quite easily, but very carefully.
As far as a lanyard, it would have to be very thin, think aviation wire thickness. Any thicker, you’d have to drill the knife’s existing scale and liner holes. That’s not something I’m ready for as I carry all kinds of blades.
