Here's an old Swell Center Whittler with the "thread required" Bar Shield. It's marked TORREY on all 3 blades. It was probably made for them by Berkinshaw or New York Knife Co. Well over 100 years old.

Great set of Ohtas.

I guarantee he does not restrict himself to bar shields. I got a couple acorn shields from him on mine.

Thanks for that information. I'll keep my eyes open. I do like a nice acorn shield!

Man, is that sweet. What great lines, proportions and workmanship. The long pull and cut swedge on the master looks just about perfect.

What's the closed length? I'm guessing around 3-1/2". I'd love to see a few more pics...

Barry, your whittler collection must be just plain stunning!!

Gus let us know Richard Rogers is fond of the bar shield with his post. Here is one of Richard's jacks I am fond of:

Great knives on this thread! Charlie, that Davis Moose is spectacular.

Here's my attempt to show the smallest Bar shield in the thread. It measures only 5/16". The knife is stamped Walter & Co & is 2 1/2" closed.

I think you win, Barry!
I'd like to know who built this knife, with a bar shield, for the Hudson's Bay Company!?

The shield on this 4" Schrade Cut Whittler looks a lot like the ones that Empire used for many years. This one was in the Schrade Factory display.

I love those old New England Cutlery Companys. There were so many 130 years ago. What a great history. Here's an old one that's stamped AMERICAN KNIFE CO PLYMOUTH. Made in Plymouth Hollow CT 1849 to 1875. In 1875 the name changed to Thomaston CT. It's a whittler 2 7/8" closed, with pinched bolsters & a bar shield with the name "HATTIE" engraved on it. If knives could talk.......
