This knife was made when I was 8 years old yet it arrived in brand new condition on Friday. I love eBay!

I know the feeling.

I have a couple of 10-dot 1970 Case knives, received in essentially as-new condition. Those were made when I was 9 (I'm 50 now). That 'Priority Mail' package may have just as well been a time capsule. It's a great feeling to open those up. :)

Edit:
By the way, that's a nice catch you have there.

I like those "dots" knives too...they are like commemoratives: 1970 (graduated H.S.), 1974 (graduated college), 1977 (began working for Uncle Sam) etc

You got some catchin' up to do whippersnapper... ;)

By your standards, sir, I've got a LOT of catchin' up to do (and sources of $$$ to find). I can only hope to do as well as what you've posted in here. :D

I can relate to the 'significant year' idea, in collecting these. Lately, I've been noticing a lot of listings for knives from '79 (graduated H.S.) and '81 (joined the Navy). Going all the way back to '61 (my birth year), I'll probably have to look a bit harder (and spend more) to find some good ones there.

This is my one and only Barlow, Schrade Imperial USA, just bought it from ebay (it hasnt even arrived yet) its from the 1970's and has never been used or sharpened. I have never seen one, even online with that"Madison Bionics" logo, can anyone tell me what that is about? Can anyone tell me how rare/collectable this knife is? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Corey.

Howdy Corey. Welcome aboard.
You can post pictures if you upload them to a hosting service such as Photobucket. Once you have done that, you can either use the picture tool in the toolbar and insert the link with it, or you can just insert the IMG code in your post.

I think the Barlow is my favourite of all pocketknives.

theres nothing on telly.

A Barlow generally has an extended Bolster, giving it it's unique appearance. The bolster is almost one third the length of the knife!
Here's a rare one that belongs in this thread. It's the only SCC Spey Barlow I've ever seen, and checking with my fellow Schrade collectors, it's the same story with them. You find them offered in old catalogs, but not "in the flesh"!

Only have the one right now but I've really wanted another one ever since I got this one. I've looked at them a lot on line just haven't pulled the trigger but after this thread I think I just might ;)

Barlows are a pattern I did not own for a very long time; a pity actually because it is such a nice pattern. That BF Barlow was a grail knife for me when I saw it and Jason Baker graciously sold me his or maybe one of his. What a great knife it is too. I have a couple of Bokers that I like quite a lot as well.

great stags too

Had to hunt around for this pic. Here's my Russell collection, Blues.
If you collect Barlows, Russell must be represented!
BarlowRussells.jpg

The second one is a bit worn, and the bottom one is a Camillus reproduction.

see blues quote below, I think its actually a Colonial

I quoted your Barlow Ivan, to bring it here, and make it easy to see the resemblance with these Camillus made ones. Except for the last Repro Russell, the pin placement and bolsters tell a lot. Seems Camillus changed their pattern a bit; to make the Russell!?
Ulster and Schrade-made are slightly different, IIRC.
Camillus-madeBarlows.jpg

Look at the swedge on the main blade of my left knife, and Ivan's!!
Virtually identical cut! Deeper into the blade on Ivan's, but same angle at the nick. The glaring difference for me, is the proportions of bolster to handle. Seems the Camillus knives in my pic have longer handles or shorter bolsters; not sure which. Are you good with a micrometer Ivan??

if the 1998 is actually a Colonial, the spring pin position makes more sense

Bill,

Here's some info on the 1998 versions made by Colonial based on info from my source at Dexter-Russell.

The blades are 440A.

As Colonial was in financial difficulty when they produced the barlows, the blades were stamped by Dexter-Russell using their own steel from AK Steel in Coshocton ,Ohio. They (Dexter-Russell) also supplied the steel for and stamped the springs.

Interesting the things you learn along the way.

And for a continuation of a wealth of Barlow photos, thanks to Charlie, see this thread also
