Basic 7 vs. BJ?

Wow, thanks for all the replies! I think I definitely need a basic 7 now to try out. And the 5 to go with it is very nice. I never tried the res c handles, so maybe I will find one to be my next favorite blade!
Does anyone have a spine shot of the 7 or 5?
And, these all has the elf choil, right?
And, how thick was the 5? Thanks in advance!

Dave,

All the basic line were 1/4" thick M-INFI.

The crinkle-coat Basic 7, 5, 3 had the elf choil.
The crinkle Basic 9 had a full choil.
The smooth-coat Basics all had kind of a half-choil, a little bigger than the "elf", but not really enough to get your whole finger into.

Take another look at Jimmy's posted photos showing all the variations, and you'll see what's what.

... I think we need a Choiless Anorexic Basic 7 and Choiless Anorexic Boss Jack set. CAB7 and CABJ.
It's funny you said that, because I was just thinking yesterday I would love to have an anorexic Boss Jack without the choil.

From my recollection, you pretty well described the demise of the Basic series. I seem to remember the supply of M-INFI was exhausted and a new batch would cost much more; at that point I pleaded for INFI Basics, but I was told it would not happen. It was not long after that Swamp Rat was born.

I was elated when the Basic 11 came out. Hopefully if enough people speak up, the Basic series will finally be reborn, this time in INFI. The benefits of Res-C grips have been well described here; I could not agree more how comfortable they are. For me the comfort is not just from the material but also the shape (and size) of the handle - definitely a Busse classic! Thanks everyone for your input on the Basics!

I haven't had or held a Busse basic but I do love the looks of the 5, 7 and 9 (the 3 seems to have TO much handle for the blade) and would love to own one of each.
I have an original run Dumpster Mutt that has the old Basic handle and I love it!! It's one of the most comfortable handle shapes I've had the pleasure of holding.
The seems to be close to the same size as the Basic 5, can anyone verify?
I think that it would be awesome to revisit the Basics with INFI to go along with the B11.
What say you?
Basic Death Chat???

I am all for bringing the Basic's back ... or developing new knives/handles using Res C.

I am not too sure that the "death chat's" work though ... but I'm happy enough to put a few supporting posts in them if you wanted to start one.

The availability of the Basic's is certainly less than the demand ... that's for sure

I don't have a picture, but I've owned both at one time or another. The dumpster mutt was thicker in every single regard, it was thicker at the spine, had a thicker tip, thicker edge, lower main grind, and was heavier in the hand. They are roughly the same size, I think the dumpster mutt may be a bit shorter.

Dumpster mutt:
Steel: SR-77
Hardness: 58 - 60 Rc
Handle: Resiprene C
Thickness: Approx .285"
Blade Length: 5" with penetrator tip
Overall Length: 9 1/2"

I want to say that blade length and overall length are the same between the two models. The basic 5 is a much better general use knife, unless you really need that extra thickness and weight. It has a thinner edge, a full height grind, slightly thinner stock thickness, thinner tip, and more edge due to it's small choil.

Sorry, komondor--went right by me. Guess I've seen too many posts like that over the years from people who were ludicrously serious, which was probably exactly what you were pointing up. My apologies, bro'.

No problem Will. It's my fault. I'm reluctant and rarely use smilies, and this sometimes get's me misunderstood.

Were the basic 5's asymmetrical edge too? Or were some regular v?
And, anyone have a spine shot of the 5?
This turned out to be a pretty cool thread. I sure wish a new type of basic line would be brought back by Jerry, I would buy them all!

I'm hoping that Dan Busse is gradually building a line of alternatives to the Basics with his INFI Scrapper models, and I doff my hat to Dan for the S5LE--the closest factory product I've ever seen to my idea of the perfect hunter/utility knife.

We've seen Scrapper 4, 5 and 6 (though no INFI/mudder on the 6), and I'd love to see a Scrapper 7 model in INFI that carries forward the lines of the S5.

A 7" INFI blade in saber-ground 1/4" stock modeled on the S5 blade but with the blended zero convex edge bevel, and with a mudder handle--THAT would get my attention. Light weight with idiot-proof pry-strength at the spine, a wonderfully efficient cutting edge, and secure, comfortable ergonomics that will not quit. A lightweight camp knife extraordinaire that, together with a good, strong 3-4" blade folder, would be my choice if I were heading out on an open-ended trek across any outback or post-nuclear winter landscape (my ultimate fantasy--I'm not big on zombie slaying, but give me the apocalypse and I'm happy :p).

All of the basic's I've owned have had asymmetrical edges

Mine, also, but I've heard of some Basic owners who have/had factory V-ground blades.

These are the ye' olden rat swords I spoke of :p
They may or may not actually exist, but if anyone would have a random one off set of swamp rat swords, it would be skunk. Two hardrive crashes after these were posted and I do not have the originals. These are thanks to google static images.

The first one is not really my thing, as I'd rather have a machete then a sword (since I only have the money for one), but the second one looks like it would work. I would love to see a basic 14 or 16, though I don't know what jerry would have to do to get the balance and proportions right. If you made the blade a tad bit less tall then the basic 11 it would help reduce the weight towards the front end.

That has wonderful possibilities--just broaden the blade and keep it thin. And, of course, make it INFI.

Anybody check out what someone wants for a Basic 9 on that fleabay site? Just thought I would share.
