O.K. with all of the posts about super steel on BF, ( I have acquired some knives but haven't used them yet)

Here's the question- IF you were to use some christmas money and buy one of these 2 110's which would you buy and why? Also which have you all bought and used? I haven't used any 154CPM/CM or S30V- yet...

Both are the same price.

So what do you all think?

Bass Pro Shops 110 with 154CPM Blade steel?
OR
Cabelas 110 Alaskan Guide with S30V?
Thanks in advance for your time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

154CPM/CM was devloped as a turbin balde steel
S30V was devloped as a knife balde steel ... i have heard that it has more salt resistance then 154
i have not tryed 154
but my .02 is go for one designed for a knife...

s30v cabelas hands down the best blade steel for your money.Any knife that can be constantly used without so much as a touch up is a great choice, bos s30v is vry good at holding a edge!!!!!
.

So, since Hoyt Buck ground his knives out of old files, we should avoid his old knives, is that what you're saying??? :grumpy:

No! They should be bought whenever possible, but for a different reason. But then again you knew that didn't you? :) Time to take your tongue out of your cheek Trax. ;) :D

Jim:

Go with the S30V. I have found from real world tests(carrying and using) the S30V to be the most corrosion resistant stainless I have personally used. There are more rust resitant, even rust-proof stainless blade steels out there, but they are so soft they are useless. I have used 440C and BG-42 for a while. Rust seems to "bite" into them if you will, faster than S30V. I have been able to always wipe the light red/brownish starter rust spots off of S30V before they can "bite" into the steel. On my 440C and BG-42, even though you can remove the rust with NEVR-DULL, pits are left behind. I have never owned a knife bladed with 154 CM, so I can't comment on that.

Please keep in mind that these are my personal experiences. I am sure results will vary. I spend every free moment I have saltwater fishing and carry the knife in my back pocket sans sheath. Although a folder makes a lousy boat knife, it's always in my pocket, so it's just there; kinda like carrying money I guess. The rust issues have developed without me even using them on a boat. It's a combination of the salt in the air and me sweating. Remember...these are merely MY experiences.

Thanks! This is the kind of info I was looking for! Your experiences!! I have used neither yet! Also salt water shouldnt be a problem up here , but the Cabelas AG is also coated for extra corrosion resistance...
Thanks!

jim i havent had the 154 and all i have cut with the s30v is hair but i would recommend the cabelas also and if possible get the stag handled version , its a beauty

Hi Jim,

I have not used the 154 so I can't give a comparison; sorry. But, I do have S30V from Buck via Cabelas. I used it this year at hunting camp and....well....that knife is on my side right now. You see I have had it with me every day since I first used it.....best dam steel I have ever used on a Knife. I have never used 154 or BG-42 don't have it yet....but I will....some day real soon :) ;) you can bank on that!!!!

After Christmas I am gonna get a custom shop BG42...it has to be done :)

You and me both Mav. When Joe gives the Ok I'm sending for a blade swap;) Last year I kept procrastinating.....Didn't want to part with the few $$$$ as I was getting more knives not up-grading the one I already had:foot: .

After what I just put my BG-42 through, I am "thinking" of going back to my AG S30V for EDC. Don't have anything 154CPM.
But I like the NS on the BG-42 so much...what to do...what to do?
Not because I prefer one to the other...haven't used the BG-42 long enough to form an opinion. Just that I feel crummy for messing up the 110 BG-42 aesthetically and the AG has been good to me so far.
Like having to choose between Mrs. Howell or The Professor.

Is there one definitive thread or link someone can post that shows the qualities compared in a graph or table?

I read your customer comments on the 110AG on the cabelas sight on both of the 110 AG models ;)
Gonna have to try one out! 4 mule deer bucks without sharpening is pretty impressive!!!

Jim,

All of the other knives I used to skin & feild dress deer would get dull before the first one was done. This one here on my side right now was still sharp after dressing out and skinning 4 muley's. What made me pull out the Lansky was capping out my son's fisrt ever deer, I kept hitting the skull and capping around the antlers is hard on a blade. I was very impressed that after a few strokes with the Lansky set med & fine stones the blade was hair popping sharp again. Thats what Bucks S30V and Boss heat treating can do  .

John...
Does the logo eventually wear off? Sirus question. Jackalope skinnin' ain't the same amount of work a deer warrants. My logo is still there. I don't mind it, but am wondering.
Inquiring Goose.

I am not sure that Bass Pro has 110. It says
Closed length: 3-3/4''
and this is not 110 length.

Thanks, Vassili.
