Bass Pro Shops 154CPM 110 VS. Cabelas S30V 110AG

Bass Pro version is a 110. I live about 5 minutes from Bass Pro, and bought one a couple of months ago, blade is kind of a bluish gray color, comes with a reddish brown 110 sheath. Very nice looking knife, the side of the box has the following code # B110-BP5-0. It also has the Bos heat treat mark on it.

Is that the 154CPM blade??? IOW -

$64.99 Item # 38-886-460-01 FOLDING HUNTER KNIFE with Crucible Service Centers' 154 CPM steel

Yes it is the 154CPM. By far one of the sharpest knives I have ever owned out of the box.

Thanks for the welcome chickentrax. I didnt remove the blade finish, liked it just the way it was, no Bass Pro logo or anything like that. As far as spark goes, i'm only 20 minutes away from 1SKS, been out there many many times, more than my wife cares for, lol. Outstanding service, i'd recommend him or 1SKS to anybody.

Actually, I didn't realize Buck had used 154CPM, I thought the steel was 154CM, which doesn't use the particle technology. BassPro's 110 in 154CPM looks like a good knife though, but I'm fairly certain that's a typo and they didn't mean 154CPM.

The reason I say that is that on Buck's steel page, they list 154CM and not 154CPM. Also Crucible lists the steel as 154CM. IIRC 154CPM using the particle technolgy will eventually be the replacement for 154CM and that a number of knifemakers who don't like S30V are waiting for it, but I don't think it's in production yet.

All that said, for edge holding, I'd recommend the Cabela Alaskan Guide 110. S30V has excellent edge retention. Polish the edge for best performance, S30V doesn't do as well with a toothy edge. As for corrosion, my 154CM blades show a slight oxidation from breathing air, let alone getting into blood. The coating on the Cabela blade is really good, I don't know about the coating on the BassPro 110 blade.

It's a fairly explicit typo, then...

The best just got better! Buck has teamed with Crucible Service Centers' 154 CPM steel to make the toughest, highest-performance hunting knives available. Made using the Crucible Particle Metallurgy process for excellent uniformity in the distribution of carbides and alloying elements throughout the steel for consistency; unsurpassed edge retention and toughness. Higher Rockwell rating (by 1.5 points) than other steels with better toughness, more wear resistance, and less tendency to chip or break -- this unique composition makes home sharpening a snap! Closed length: 3-3/4''.

Maybe one of our moderators could comment... :)

Yep, if someone out there has better info on 154CPM vs 154CM than what I can find on the web I'll defer.

John...
Does the logo eventually wear off? Sirus question. Jackalope skinnin' ain't the same amount of work a deer warrants. My logo is still there. I don't mind it, but am wondering.
Inquiring Goose.

Hello Marvin,

Nope that logo is still looks like new....well just pulled it out of the sheath for a look see and their is some wear showing on the outer circle. so it may rub off in time. I kine like stuff on them blades :p .

Really? My is almost 5" Closed length...

Rephrased: My 110's open blade, measured from the bolster to the tip, measures ~3 3/4"...give or take an eighth...

The closed length (bolster to bolster) of the knife is ~4 7/8"...

But you are right about Bass Pro screwing up the "closed length"...

Hmmm... OK - I did not understand it first time, because you refered to my message where I clearly sad Closed length. Now when you Rephrased: it is more clear however then you first post then has no meaning any more. I guess you just can not admit that did not pay attention to what was in my first post.

But you are right about Bass Pro screwing up the "closed length"...

But I am right, thank you, you noticed, finaly, so my question is same - is it Buck 110 or some mini version, it is not 112, which is 4 1/2 Closed length, however BassPro does not reffer to it as model 110, but hunting knife.

Did anybody bought it already? This is second limited edition with this steel, first was first SpecBump.

Thanks Vassili.

Basspro Buck 110 image Buck 110 is stamped on the ricasso, so I'd say it's a safe bet that it is a Buck 110.

That said, it seems to me there are problems with the BassPro description. Confusing blade length vs closed length, and the knife steel sounds like they're discussing S30V, but they call it 154CPM which I'm not so sure is in production yet; it isn't on the Crucible website and they make it. 154CM is out there and Buck uses it.

Vassili,
When folks are trying to answer your question and get it wrong, lighten up. Dumping on them is counter-productive, next time they may not respond at all even if they do know the answer.

Wow Ras...
