Bass Pro Shops 154CPM 110 VS. Cabelas S30V 110AG

Thanks, I am thinking to add it to my collection.

...I'm not so sure is in production yet; it isn't on the Crucible website and they make it. 154CM is out there and Buck uses it.

It is not in production. Crucible gives it away to different manufacturers for test runs. Like Kershaw SpecBump first was with CPM 154 blade.

Vassili,
When folks are trying to answer your question and get it wrong, lighten up. Dumping on them is counter-productive, next time they may not respond at all even if they do know the answer.

Well, I try to correct him first and then he came with this "rephrasing" instead of just sad - "Sorry, I did not pay attention" - it is eregant and I still did not hear sorry from him. May be I was wrong choosing same tone as his answer?

Thanks, Vassili.

You got the answer you were looking for and still you want an apology from the guy who answered? I don't see why it is arrogant or why an apology should be required. Chickentrax' "rephrasing" corrected his answer and is appropriate to that end.

It's 154 CM. Bass Pro's listing has some typos. The steel type and closed length are incorrect.
154CM is still good steel, particularly with a Paul Bos heat treat. We shouldn't blame the knife for a front office typo.

I guess what I mean to say is that there are a lot of questions that have been raised in this thread trying to figure out what the BassPro 110 is and the bottom line is that it's a good knife regardless of the typos that beg the questions.

Not sure about the catalog typo but on the reverse side of the blade mine has the Bos heat treat mark and below that it says CPM154. Hope this helps with any confusion.

That changes everything
:)

Is the Bass pro shops 110 154cm or CPM 154? Both are chemically the same but manufactured much differently. The CPM 154 is made by Crucible and has a much more uniform grain structure with smaller carbides than 154cm. I've heard it also holds an edge longer and achieves a higher hardness. The CPM 154 will take a much sharper edge than 154cm. As for S30V, CPM 154 is considered to be a cheaper alternative to S30V with similar wear resistance. The big difference between the 2 is that CPM 154 will be much easier to sharpen but won't hold it's edge as long. If it turns out the 110 is 154cm then definitely go with S30V as it holds a much sharper edge much much longer.

That tells me that the BassPro write-up may not be a typo. If the blade says CPM154, I'd go with that. I ordered one too.

Thanks for posting that! The tang stamp is put on at and by Buck, with Paul Bos supervising the heat treat and physically testing selected specimens off the line...I'm sure Paul would have noticed and said something to Buck (after all, it has his name on it)...so I would go with the 154CPM until someone at Buck says differently... :)

brboru7 - Can you post a pic or scan of that tang stamp??? We have many doubting Thomases here... :D

I got ya, and I agree.;)I want to pick one of those up myself after I recover from my holiday spending.

This is how the "bad blade exchange" thread went...

Quote razorblades...
"I feel Buck has lost all of their old school ways,In no way do they have the same knives now that came out of Cali......I have seen way too many q/c issues on their Idaho knives to consider ever buying any of them.Moving on to grohmann knives and case."

Buck_110 quote to razorblades
"I agree with you. The latest knives I will collect are 1998 production. I only own one beyond that year; a 2001 champagne(gold) titanium crytal. I needed it to complete my collection of 560s."

But you still want to pick up a new 154Cpm 110? Maybe it was made before 1998?

Razorblades, good luck with your cxxe collection I am sure they wont have any Q.C. issues. That will free up some Buck knives for me when everyone else stops buying Buck... Maybe the prices will come down with less guys bidding/buying them, so I can afford more!!! Every cloud has a silver lining...

All I have to say is with posts like this on a public forum I would hate to be a new knife buyer looking at starting my Buck collection. I would probably go to another MFg.

Also. Just my .02
-DarrylS :D
how much are you up to now .50?

My advice to a new knife buyer would be to go to eBay and search for navajoprincess2b and look at her offerings. Her prices are ~ competitive with the Custom Shoppe and I'd be willing to bet that she culls the defects before posting her wares... :)

That is good advice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Merry christmas!!!!!!!!!!

MadMike - Then you would have to go to Cabela's for their Alaskan Guide 110, in S30V...and compare it with the Bass Pro 154CM/CPM/whatever... ;)

Hey!!!...Isn't that what this thread was about in the first place???...

YES!!! Thank you!!!!!!

Blame me, my apologies to BassPro. I took the info available on various websites (primarily Buck and Crucible) and bounced that against the BassPro product description and saw a conflict. The piece of information missing would be easily overcome with a picture of the other side of the knife. The info provided by brboru7 describing the reverse side of the blade having the Bos heat treat mark and stamped "CPM154" is huge. This is the first production knife I'm aware of made from CPM154 steel and a master is doing the heat treat. My feeble brain says that makes it a collector. . .

My knife accumulation is sporadic and is mostly folding knives I bought for EDC and more than a few fixed blades for camping. Some of the folders are LE versions of knives I already EDC'd. I'm not a Buck collector (although it's looking as though I may become one in a limited way). Until recently the Buck knives that I've owned were a 110 and Prince from the 80's, and a 110 from summer '72 (that I gave as a gift and which came back to me 23 years later very used -- that's a good thing) :) Then I picked up a Cabela Alaskan Guide 110 when they first came out (this is the 110 I carry) and I've recently acquired a Buck custom 110 (Elk horn/BG-42). Now I've ordered a CPM154 bladed 110 from BassPro.

Does five 110's make me a Buck collector? Buck's anonymous anyone?? ;)

Check out that thread here about 154CPM...The blade blanks are being sold at knifeshows, and it looks like they can be ordered online...It's Crucible's website that is not being updated...shame on them... :grumpy:
