Batoning large pieces of wood is not necessary...

btw, since everyone is curious, i was originally looking for advice on the best way to sharpen the broken tip out, and jeff literally held a gun to my head through the computer and made me send it back to him.
:D
He can be pretty persuasive, can't he?

(Though not to be misunderstood, I never felt as if he held a gun to my head, he just made it very clear, he'd be more than prepared for an exchange. And I still have my old Izula and use it daily.)

well i don't know about all this batoning and "survival talk", but that has to be one of the best looking wraps i've ever seen on an izula if i must say so myself ;)

glad to see it is getting put to some good use and not sitting in a land fill somewhere.

Here's your Izula now, all fixed with a convex edge:

Maybe this has been covered on another thread? But has anyone made a fire with a magnifying glass? I know it can't be depended on at night, or if there's cloud cover or a heavy forest canopy but It does work, even on wet stuff.

I have used a freznel lens a bunch of times, but never on wet things. When I want a fire I tend to leave wet stuff alone...

Jeff...wait....so if im understanding this right, the tip was chipped off...so youre saying if one of the knives coating comes off...its STILL useable?!!!!! lol. Hmmm...I didn't know this :)

Uhm, you're not supposed to do that to tinder. :o

Has cricketdave been by your place recently? :D

Ok, cramping sides, laffin' hard, trying to breath. That was funny.

I'm suddenly understanding the whole ESEE panties phenomenon a little better. It's all about easy access to tinder balls. :D

See what I did there? I made a pun on tender balls.

After I received my Christmas ESEE 6 from the company, I thought "Hmmm, I need to make them proud". I went to my cousin's place and searched for fatwood using my 6 and discovered Mountain Cedar (not sure exactly what it is, only what we call it) doesn't make fatwood. Fail. Then it hit me, I'll try this baton thing everyone's doing on BF. I grabbed a bicept diameter piece of seasoned live oak, but couldn't bring myself to drive that beautiful blade through that hard wood. I then grabbed a piece of cedar about 2 x 3 inches and went to town. It actually worked great making kindling. I then made a fire with my Swedish steel. It only took 20 minutes with 3 people gathering materials and me working feverishly at the firepit:D. In my defense, it had been raining for days and things were pretty wet. Take care and God bless.

I agree with the boredom theory, nothing passes the time then splitting a massiv log with a knife, plus it fells pretty good to get that nice split.

guyon- give me a couple days to get a video camera, and il see if i can do it. im kinda scared that this is gonna start some weird new fetish though....
