Battle Saw or ASHBM

Meh, since they're through-hardened, the battle saws look like 10 miles of stress fracture points to me. Like the "break a piece" chocolates. Smash the baton down on it and select where you'd like to snap your blade.

I'm sure they don't break easily, that's just why I didn't bite. (Just the looks of it) Also does the saw work as a saw or is it just for coolness? I've never seen an instance of anybody sawing anything with it.

The ASHBM is just about as good as it gets IMO.

It's not made to be a saw. It's made for Notching.

You'll break your maul and fracture your hand before you'll break a Battle Saw batoning with it. Think of it as having ten campfire pot lid lifters instead of 10 stress risers if it'll help you sleep better. ;) :p

As for sawing, I wouldn't recommend it for finish carpentry on your crown molding, but mine has plowed 1/4 inch kerfs into it's share of 2 x 4's and sawed clean thru a few for fun.

Using a light touch-- almost just the blade weight itself-- is key to getting the kerf started and then you can pick up the speed once you get her grooved and it'll chew pine & spruce like nobody's business.

It's not made to be a saw. It's made for Notching.

It's not a sawzall, that's true...but it's still a nice option to have open to you, and if you dulled your edge and had no ready means to bring it back, you're still in the game with the Saw-- it'll virtually never need sharpening if used on logs, limbs, boards, etc.

"To me" and "my opinion" being the operative words, fellas. I still wouldn't have any desire for a BS whatsoever. I'm very happy with my ASHBM and basic 9.

It's a cool knife and all, but the saw back just kills it for me. It's just too "hokey" in my opinion.

Now, if it was the same knife only without the saw back, and full flat ground (with the CBT), *sigh*, oh man... I'd be all over that.

I agree with all those that say it is a cool knife. I still prefer the straight spine. IF they had come out with a competition finish or naked version, I would have got one for the cool factor. But these days it has to be very special for me to waste a lot of my time removing a coating. If you can only get one, get the ASHBM. It is the ICON of Busse knives. The Battle Saw is cool in a Rambo sort of way. But the ASHBM is timeless and there is tons of videos of ASHBM's processing wood.

Yes, if they would have offered the Battle Saw in Comp or Satin I would have kept one because they are a unique looking knife, I no longer settle for what is offered-Cheers!!!

Well gentleman --- thanks PeteyTwoPointOne --- I am the owner of a new Black/Red G10 Battle Saw and awesome Patriot Leather Sheath.

Since I've already owned the ASHBM --- I figured I'd give the Battle Saw a shot. Should be here in 2 days!! Woohoo

Theres something about BS.... its one of the Best looking "Strippers" out there, BS and TG in my opinion

I doubt that just because think of how many cheap through hardened stainless steel saw back "Rambo" style knife clones were made in the 80's. All through hardened with a much more brittle steel. You never hear of that happening.

The one weak point of the battle saw that I can see is the tip. For some reason, they really taper the battle saw to a NARROW tip! The last inch and a half of the blade is ridiculously thin for a knife that size, esp considering that the corrugated bevel runs through it at that same location. It looks as if it would be very easy to snap the tip off, espessially considering the amount of force through leverage you'd have with such a long knife. I don't know why they made such a skinny tip for the edge, it doesn't save any weight, and a thicker / stronger tip could have much more easily been made. the battle saw isn't that thick anyway to warrant such a narrow tip.

Well first of all, there are a few ways to reduce stress riser issues that a saw back would bring. Make the steel very soft, to a stress relief thermal cycle after notching, or maybe, hmm, how about cut the notches and then heat treat the parts. I would bet money that none of these battles saws will ever fail due to a stress riser issue. Busse knows HT better than 99% of the knife industry. I think they know how to solve the stress riser issue

Are you going to beat on it?

Nice vids Firestrike :thumbup: Makes me want to go beat mine up too lol.

Thanks, I like to have reasons to use my BS. Some do, some don't, but I take this thing a lot of places and use it as much as I can. I am trying to give it a competition finish the hard way :)

Great videos Firestrike, I enjoyed watching them!

In regards to the 2008 Sarsquatch, Battle SAW, and ASHBM, I think they are all great knives and are each tailored a bit differently to specific purposes. I currently own a 2008 Squatch and Battle Saw, but I have never owned an ASHBM. I think if I ever held an ASHBM with a swedge like Cobalt's I would probably need one, but I have not. With the edge you would likely end up putting on the BS or ASHBM, either would be an excellent wood chipper I'm sure.

Congrats, please strip it immediately upon arrival

Thanks guys!! I'm actually really excited to put a proper edge on my BS. I think I'll keep the Squatch and sell something else.

I don't think the tip should be much of an issue --- although I haven't exactly done any abusive prying . . . Yet

And hell yes this BS will be a user. Since the start of this thread--- I've really fallen in love with the BS --- can't wait
