O
One bad thing about the BK21 is that it has opened the door to spending $150 for a knife. Before I was much more hesitant to spend more than $100 for a knife but now I find myself drooling over $150 blades and not balking at the price. I have to remind myself that I don't use my knives often or hard enough to make $150 the norm rather than the exception.

It's a matter of perspective I suppose.
I can relate though.
I remember when I was looking for a camp knife and I found the USMC for $50. I didn't really want to spend that much for one knife...
Well, about 4 years have passed and quite a few knives have been added to the hoard.
My perspective on price has changed, because as I've acquired more knives I've learned a lot more about value, differerent steels, comfortability, along with personal likes and dislikes.
I figure I'll buy based on personal preference and anticipated satisfaction.
I have a few at $200+, a couple at $300+, and one at $400+
I had to justify each one obviously and I look at it like this...My mortgage is paid, I own my vehicles, my children are well taken care of, etc...
Besides smoking, I don't have any expensive habits. I work hard and make a decent paycheck.
I really enjoy my knives. I may not use every single one all the time, but I like them all.
So really, $100?...$150?... What's the difference if you can be happy with the purchase and it does not leave you hurting financially?

Beckers have, and will, always be my favorite though. For too many reasons to list. But mostly because Ethan is a hell of a good guy and there is a lot of value in the knives he designs.

If you're aching about spending too much on knives and want to flex your modding muscles, ka-bar has the zombie chop stick @ 20$...even after buying 2 15s that I'm debating about gifting, went ahead and ordered 2 chop sticks, have some ideas on what to do to them already.

oh yeah, i need to order something from kabar soon. mmm.

that parangatang is an amazing thing... you can't not have one.

you guys ready for no shave november :D

I wish I could say the same about my mortgage.....and the "etc...." part. And really, decent knives, ESPECIALLY some of the high zoot stuff, are fairly easily turned back into cash - and not always at a loss - if you need to. I have considered this a fair amount since buying (and using) new steel is a bright spot in what is a....fairly stressful time of my existence. I balked at that kind of price, too....until I got the ZT 0560. I sure don't feel like a responsible adult at times, but I do enjoy them, and I know if I'm in dire straits I can recover *most* of the $$ I've spent. Still, I have considered that there are a few I should pass along - and maybe fund something extravagant. The problem is, for me, once I have it in my possession, I have a really hard time parting with it. Of course, when I have, well - no biggie. Not likely to part with any Beckers, though - that's what got me into this community to begin with, and that is above all the most important thing I've gained from this - the first Gathering was all it took to make that bedrock.

Now, if only I could carry whatever I wanted during the week (MA knife laws....suck) like I can when I'm in NH, then that'd be golden. I won't be happy about losing a $50 knife to the authorities....but I'm sure as hell not going to risk it with any of my nicer pieces.

*I guess I should have stated more accurately....
My mortgage payment is being made each month. Lol:D

I was trying to calculate that.....guessing at your age and housing prices in the PACNW - and realized I took differential equations 30 some odd years ago and nearly failed the class anyways.....

But I got your point, nonetheless.

I took diff. eq. only 25 years ago, and I'm doing good to be able to count to ten these days. I can get to twenty with my shoes off, and forty if I've got a family member close by.

I don't want to look at that at home either. I was under the impression that I had joined a family friendly forum. :thumbdn:

Now that I've acquired more steel than I can wear out in my lifetime, none of which are in the $150 range(what I paid anyway), with only a few nearing or surpassing $100...I can bring myself to pay for that ONE must have BK21...eventually :D

I did $300 worth of work for a bk77 once. I still use it when the occasion calls for it. Then again I did pay $150 for a Kershaw folder jyd2. The worth is I the hands of the holder I suppose.

I did probably $300 worth of work myself to a plain old, roll stamped, KB BK7.....and I love using that thing. Had a forum member contact me about doing one for him and, notwithstanding the fact I wasn't (and still am not) Orange, told him point blank he couldn't afford it. Worth IS in the hands of the holder......that's awesome, Nick.

A silly impromptu photo op with the contents of the home office:

I have spent more than id like to admit on knives.... Some i have bought at higher prices have not been a "better" enough knife to justify the higher price... But many have been worth it. The comp cutter is the most expensive i own, but also the most worth it. My chopweiler costs me 300, i have another 300 in sheaths for it.... These 2 blades are my favorites and see the most action so i have never once regretted the prices.

Others have came and gone. Truth is I don't use small knives... Barely ever. I use my birudashi more than any little knife I own.

Large knives get used for fun mostly. Chopweiler is the main workhorse.

Daiz, great picture! Still waiting on my double ground too bro... Stainless.... It goes fishing with me. :D

I know I know... Double grind the one I got... But I don't wanna mess it up lol

For me, the actual work done was way more than $300, but yeah it was worth it. I guess that's what happens when people see machine made and expect hand made quality for machine made prices. If that makes sense.
