Those guys are darn lucky that that shot scared the bear off. He was more humane than I think I would not have fired the warning shot, but emptied my revolver into the mother. If the shot had not scared her off, I am not sure he would have had time for a shot after recovery.
I have several bear scares. Probably the most scary was a brown bear coming toward me, where I was trapped against a shore line. I went out on the dock, and the bear followed me out on the dock. The dock went to a t at the end, and I had to dive off, and swim under the next dock over (I realize that a bear can swim better than me). Luckily the bear heard some dogs somewhere barking and decided to leave before taking a nibble on me.
I have had many experiences where I discovered cubs, and could not locate the mother (ie did not know which way to retreat so as not to cross paths with a pissed off mommy bear).
I also had a cub try to climb into my Landcruiser, and I was having a hard time getting the window rolled up before he made it in (not that the cub was a mortal threat, he might have bitten me or what ever, but it is the pissed mother coming in and eating me that concerned me..........and no, we weren't feeding the cub, it saw us from a ridge, and came all the way down, and followed us for a while while we putted along. we stopped for a sec, and the bear cub ran over and tried to scramble up into the window).
