You just saved the thread. :)

I was getting so disgusted with the bickering, I was about to close it. Then I saw at least you get the idea, this is a knife discussion! Thank you.

And, if they lose the $40 special, they won't be crying because they are out $500 for a S30V or D4 blade, like I saw a guy do on Sicily DZ when his Randall Model 14 (that he had saved for some months to buy) for came out of its sheath when he got flipped upside down before his chute opened and he watched it quickly drop into the woods beneath him. I suppose it is still there, altho that was 30 years ago and maybe somebody found it by now.

I lost my favorite German made lockback folding knife over Sicily DZ about the same time. I don't know the brand but I was never able to find one like it again. Like you I always wondered if anyone else ever found it. It also started me thinking about being on the ground when the second lift came over and THEIR knives started dropping out of the sky!!

Anyone know if the 'BG' knife in question is full tang?

haven't read the entire thread, ...

Are you talking about the Prodigy? My Gerber LMF II is full tang and is very similar.

The knife is really not that great. It looks cool, but to use for smaller intricate tasks, it leaves much to be desired. I also wish they would make a plain edge version. The sheath it comes with is pretty dang awesome though.

If I wanted that style of knife I'd get a Gerber Prodigy. All the branding on the bear knife would be an embarrassment.
Yup, no way I'm pulling that knife out on a camping trip with my circle of friends, ha! Hey I'm in norcal too maybe we know each other, lol.

We don't know yet. I tried to search around and looked at other Gerber knives that have a full tang and the ones I looked at have it listed in the specs. Its not listed on the specs for this knife, neither is the steel or where its made...as of a week or so ago anyway. I couldn't find it on Gerber's site either. Unless someone else knows?

I wonder how hard it would be to remove the serrations on a belt sander, and turn it into a recurve....
I might give it a go considering the price of these.

I think you are wrong there... if I'm not mistaken, the LMF II IS NOT a full tang, because the blade actually ends halfway inside the handle. Then the protruding pommel is just another piece of metal stuck on the back of the handle.

See this pic taken from www.knifetests.com

as you can see, the blade and the pommel are separated...
that is why I do not consider, IMO, a full tang blade

On the other hand, the Prodigy should be a full tang, infact its little pommel is part of the blade

:)

Just one question about the BG Prodigy:

actually is on Amazon.com as a presale: every knife will be shipped from 1st of november.

But after them, they'll still be available or not? cause that changes the way this knife will take value in the future

Since I collect survival knives, I have one of these Gerber BG survival knives on pre-order. I will post a review of it after I test it. Then we can end all the speculation and find out how it stacks up to Ranger, ESEE, SOG, Foster, Ritter, Bark River, and others. Then I will hide it in the bottom of my big box o' knives so nobody thinks I'm a knife newbie. :D

How about we stop the craptalk and wait till Horn Dog comes out with the facts; come on guys youre raging at each other over a silly survival knife while probably some of you have 5 or 6 other knives you can take into the bush anyway. Nobody's telling you to buy anything, we're just sharing opinions. :)

I don't need the knife but would be interested in the horizontal carry sheath. Does anyone know who makes it?

i watched the knife test on the gerber lmf and it did pretty damn well. i have the prodigy i think its a great knife for the price.

so quit the bellyaching.

i'd love it if it came as a straight edge version as well.

would love to see more gerber knives made here.

the prodigy version also feels real great in my hands and the sheath is very nice.

One of the LMF's selling points, is that it can cut live wires because of the isolated handle. If the tang was connected to the pommel, ie. a full a tang, you'd get fried trying that.
Something i couldnt care less about, cause i dont go around cutting live wires on my backpacking trips. Soldiers probably feel differently.

Personally, the 3/4 length tang dosent matter to me, cause the LMF is a pretty damn tough knife as it is.

You just beat me to it.:)
Could just be an excuse ,why yhey never made it full tang?
I have almost got my self one sooo many times . But some thing else always come home with me instead.

Bear gryils knife? i will get one...may be:confused:

Fulltang knives are one on the simplest constructions and Gerber makes plenty of them. They dont need an excuse for not making one.

Besides the LMF handle has more manufacturing steps in it, thus making it more expensive to produce.

Fair enough. I DO like them . like i said , i have gone to buy one for my self Just find some thing else i would rather have every: time i go to get one. :o

Im not knocking them one bit.

I sent Gerber an email asking them o consider making one with a plain edge. I've tried serraited blades over the years and found them to be a PITA. I gave away all mine and replaced them with smooth edge blades.

I keep hearing they are good for cutting rope but I've never found that to be true. The little teeth snag and prevent a fast cut. I just looked up some test on serraited blades and discovered they all had trouble with rope too. Check out the test on the SOG Seal 2000 on kinfetest.com.

I bought a Sog today with teeth and I'll give I one more go. If I find it to prevent the tool from working as good as my plain edged knives it too will be retired.

As for the BG knife? I think the orange handle and the big BG on the handle is a bit much. I do like the kit though and I plan on buying one to play with as soon as they are available. I'm hoping it will have a plain edge on it. :)

Well,

I have not read the whole thread...

While, I will of course have to build a better sheath for it... Of course, that goes without saying...

If they come out with a plain edge version, I would be happy to suggest it to a friend who likes that sort of thing....

I don't like his show, though I am going to give his new show a try, but I like him.

From the YouTube of him I have seen, un-scripted he is a genuine and likeable bloke.

Too bad he will always be known as the guy who ate a raw steak out of a sheepskin, and other such fakery.

Best,
Marion
