Bear Grylls Grandfather Knife?

Dave, the Böker camper is basically a Vic Tourist with wood-grain scales added to make it look rustic (?) or camperish or North American. The Case BSA job looks weird only because of the scale color — blue?! (Well, not to my taste, back then or now...)

The more I look at that Gerber thing, the more I think it's a camper knife as designed by someone who has never seen a camper knife, but has heard a description of one. It's trying to be a camper/scout knife, but it hasn't all the right pieces, and the ones it does have are not quite the right size or shape or in the right places.

The scales? Well, again, tastes differ. I don't see them as toad-ugly. If the brass is real, then the bolsters may weather and patinate to a nice brown.

So the BG Gramps arrived today and I had a chance to play with it a bit.

The blade came nice and sharp and easily sliced through copy paper.

The corkscrew is less robust (thinner) than a Swiss Army Knife. I'll have to use it before I can make a call on its functionality.

The combination Philips/nail file is extremely difficult to open. Also, Instead of an even cross ➕ shaped end it's more like a flat screw driver with a short T cross section. Weird looking. The nail file works.

The combination flathead screwdriver/bottle opener is ridiculously difficult to open because of an overly tight spring and a badly placed nail nick. The nick is on the tang end of the blade instead of someplace that would provide more leverage.

For right at $20 US it's a decent blade.

It will definitely see pocket time and I probably wouldn't replace it if I lost it.

That's about as fair a review as I can muster.

Thanks for reading.

I have a similar half-phillips on a kutmaster mini multi tool- less useful for phillips screws than the little srewdriver on a Vic can-opener.
Thank you Limu for sticking your neck out on this.

My pleasure!

I have a thing for oddball stuff so it's easy for me to do this kind of thing!

And thanks for posting. I like your final assessment. Nicely put.
