Bear Grylls new knife is a................

i was thinking the same thing. and im gonna have to go with no.
it makes me recall one episode of survivorman where he carried a winchester fixed blade.
Not once did he say "i wish i had a more expensive knife"
it met his needs perfectly. and i think several times he has noted that what he really prefered was his leatherman

Dude, Les Stroud is survivorman, not Bear. Bear carries or used to carry a custom Bayley knife worth over $600.00 so that's why I'm curious if he's a knife knut.

oh no i know the differences.

I just cant but notice the possible parallels between the two. placing more emphasis on the skills involved than the tools they use.

bear has a knife worth $600 and worth $600 only because his name is written all over it. If he had a knife worth $600 that he paid for he would probably be a knife knut, but remember that its a sponsorship with bailey knives, he gets paid to use them(so far as my understanding of sponsorship)

I think Gerber kind of fell from grace in the late 90's. It tried to rest on its laurels, and was not prepared to deal the onslot of the tactical knives of recent years. While I will admit that in recent years Gerber has kind of cheaped out on their quality. But after looking at some of there recent offerings that Gerber is putting out this year I am starting to think that they may be on an upswing. I think they do a great job of selling knives to the average user who doesn't care about the lastest wiz-bang steel, and only want their knife to cut.

That guy would be me... Isn't that the 'point' to a knife anyways. IMHO, for my budget (sorry, I refuse to spend $300+ for a knife..... call my crazy), their knives do the job just fine. Heck, some are even a bit purty. I love my LMFII, and have a secret love for my Fast Draw. 5 yrs+ old, and well used, w/ no worries yet. Oh yeah, and the STL I bought over a year ago has not been off my keys and still no coating scratches. Not bad for $10, so I bought a 2nd to keep in my wallet, and it's so thin you can't tell it's there.

I'll stick with them.... In spite of Bear using them.....:)

very true

I have this cheap walmart gerber i bought my girlfriend as her first knife, and it was only 20 bucks, a framelock. and man, that things keeps an alright edge, and the lock up is early and very secure. No blade play. Not a bad knife at all man. Gerber is alright in my book.

Sounds like a paraframe. Another on my favorite simple Gerbers!:D

Falkniven makes knives much like the Grylls knive and, while not cheap, are much more "economically accessible".

can someone tell me what purpose the cutout in the handle on the bayley S4(bear knife) serves?

My experience of Gerber is that back in 1982 I bought a Gerber Mk I with a serrated clip ... I used that with a very good spring clip sheath throughout my selection for our S/F and it was a brilliant knife ... and I mean brilliant .... then later on ... maybe mid 80's ...I loose track a little ... I got a BMFI maybe one of the first ... I never got the chance to use it ... a friend took a liking to it and I gave it to him ... by that stage I was using a Cold Steel San Mai Master Tanto as well as the Gerber MkI ... they had just come out if that helps on the time line ... then later the Gerber Mk I I passed on to a mate as I needed a different type of knife ... I got a Patriot ... the idea was to use it for Scuba Work ... it was "horrible" ... great sheath but could not take an edge ... I think it had a failed heat treat ... it was "useless" ... I sort of gave up on them after that .... ditto Cold Steel ... both seemed to me to have outsourced their production to save money compared to how they were initially ... in essence not the same quality ...

Bear I actually know ... or know of ... we share certain people as commmon friends but have'nt met up ... his change on the Bayley knife is in part due to the huge waiting list and one guy feeling like his life was "ground hog day " from here on in ....and in part I suspect from the sort of money royalties can buy for product placement ... paid for by customers like us who buy a product outsourced to Taiwan .... which is'nt a shadow of what they used to do .... and from a user perspective ... the Bayley knife and a Gerber is like comparing an original Randall to a copy made in the cheap sweat shops of the Far East .... they share a profile together but the performance aspect is continents apart ....

For me though Bear is a bit of an "entertainer" ... Ray Mears is more "real" .... but they are "both" open to royalty pressure .... Ray Mears did'nt take long to start using a Fallkniven lock knife .... and wear a Rolex .... but it is a living for them and they are no different I suspect from you and I ... if I had the right money using Gerber knives for what little you need them in a show like Bear's .... I would jump on the chance ....

If I was "Sans Film Crew" ... and other back up .... I would be looking for my Bayley knife ... as would we all ...

Great post Peter!

I wonder if Bear might eventually design or endorse something for mass production?
Regardless of the negative opinions of some I bet it would do well.

Think they staged the scene where he was climbing out of the well? Pretty coincidental that he was so close to the opening don't you think?

Read the disclaimer at the beginning or end (I can't remember) of the show. Most of the scenarios are staged or set up to make the show more interesting to viewers.

the "behind the scenes" episode was great. You could see how long it took him to setup all his stunts and just how many people he had with him.

I'm sure he will as soon as someone puts the $ on the table... Cha Ching!!

...........Gerber Prodigy

Well, at $40-something on the internet, I had to buy one of these. While I have not used it yet, it has a surprising quality feel to it. Nice hard rubber and cordura sheath, and the knife itself reminds me somewhat of a Fallkniven with its rubberized handle and balance. Full tang. I think I could get by just fine with one of these and nothing else. Pretty good value IMO, subject to giving good performance in the field, which is the real test.
