Bear Grylls Posts go here!

What canteen and cup does he use in the series?

Also, why are all of his knives crap?

To me it looks as if he has a standard, black plastic USGI 1qt non collapsible nested in a standard GI metal cup with some form of carrier which he has strap attached to.

As for all of his knives being "crap," I think it is amusing that Bear uses such pedestrian cutlery because this crowd is really into knife overkill.

Mountain men, settlers, sailors, nationalistic explorers and general adventurers during the early 1500s through the early 1900s penetrated most of the then-unknown world using knives most of the folks here would largely consider to be "crap" if handed a typical example. It almost goes without saying that many of the natives they encountered were using imported "crap" or stone age tech.

Boats you are correct. I'll switch to a scoped rifle. :)

BTW I really dislike AR-15.com, haven't been there for at least a year.

Thanks Boats!

I think he generally uses a Brit Mil canteen and cup. Same as me sometimes. But I bought mine when he was 10 years old.

Yes, it looks like the Brit version of the same concept the Americans used up until recently.

Add a steel cup with a folding handle to the bottom and you pretty much have it.

The carrier thing that you refer to appears to simply be some 550 Para woven and tied around the canteen then slung over his shoulder. I don't own the canteen, but there is probably some way to tie some 550 around it...plus you have it then in case you need some para!

Gay? Ok I'll ask again, why don't you guys spend a few minutes looking up "facts" before you post such a dumdshit comment. Go to Bear's website and you'll see his very attractive wife (and her book), and you will even learn about his kids. BTW Les Stroud also contacts survival experts, plural, before leaving to film. I would do the same thing. Does that make me gay or prove I have no outdoor skills? Does posting questions here do the same? How about reading books on the subject. You guys need to get outside more.

Les finds a guy in the area he dosnt have people on set telling him how to build a fire...etc.

Subaru you are wrong. Again. Les has a survival expert on his staff, at least for the first season. Then he finds a resident expert and consults with him. In some circumstances his survival expert is within close range if there is a problem. Les has stated this in at least one episode. Les also carries a sat phone. I would guess Bear's crew has a sat phone also. I doubt either show could get insurance without one.

Oh, and where did you learn that Bear has "people on set telling how to build a fire". You may know this but 90% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

This was the scoped rifle. :D

Moose it sounds like someone with more talent than I have should make a rig like you describe. Hint, hint.

I think both Man vs. Wild and Survivorman are good shows as far as mainstream TV are concerned.

I mean, come on, if any network were market a show that appealed to people who frequent forums like this, it would last about as long as an icecube in the broiler. It would never go over with the typical demographic, 25 to 40yo. couch potatos who work office jobs and never go into the forest unless their family dog runs away.

These shows need to be exciting and not overly indepth, as not to overstimulate underdeveloped brains, plenty of flashing scenes and piped in, overdramatic noises and music to keep peoples attention.

I'm sure Les and Bear are both more than capable of holding their own in the wilderness. Of course they use local experts, their out of their home teritory, one cant be expected to know every tip and trick for every locale. I'm sure Les would be more than qualified to be the local expert in the NWT, his homebase.

As far as Bear goes, we all know that military SERE and survival training is poor at best, how could one be expected to be proficent, much less an expert when they could be in the jungle one day, and on a mountain top the next? I'm sure he has studied the types of topics discussed here just like we all have, most likely to a fuller extent when you consider that he makes his living on survival. I know I wouldent mind having those guys around in a bad situation.

Like I said, I like the shows, good entertainment, might even learn a thing or two but I'm not going to use them as much of a learning tool.

i for one like the show and find the crazy shit forgivable. It's pretty obvious that if you are in a true survival situation, you shouldn't take so many risks. for instance, you should probably walk around most obstacles he gleefully jump into. But you have to admit, by showing you the harder route, you do get to see the worst case scenario and crazy is pretty entertaining to watch.

And yes, Bear has said that the camera crew stays out of it unless it's a life threatening situation. I'm sure that means there's a sat phone, a helicopter ride and a warm cup of tea if there's a problem, which gives him carte blanche to dive into frozen lakes, jump into crevices or whatever other thing no one would think of doing to survive.

I'm sure les carrys that stuff. What I'm saying is bear has a whole set of people. The camera shots they get are just too good its like survivor or somthing. I'm tired of argueing because your never going to agree. nether of us know 100% what they have, were not on set with them!

This was the rifle with a higher power scope :jerkit:

As someone who has done some single camera filmmaking, bear probably wouldn't need more than one cameraman for the shots you're seeing. 5 days of footage cut down to 41 minutes.

I wasn't sayin' I could make something like that...Lord knows I can't braid anything:( ...just that in one of the episodes, he appears to use a small stretch of para from the "strap" over his shoulder...but now I can't remember what he did with it!

This is the high powered rifle + scope + armor piercing rounds...:jerkit:
Just kidding!!!:D

Dont know if this was mentioned or not...but, I wanna know why the guy insists on biting into and breaking the spines of fish to eat them raw, when he's got a knife. The episode I saw where he caught the fish in the ice, he ate the damn thing raw, at least bit right into it. Then later in the same episode he whipped out his cheap knife and cut some tree branches? Why didnt he just fillet the fish. I think he did this in another episode I saw as well. This is the part that makes me think its a little made up for TV. Ofcourse not taking anything away from the man or his show, I like watching it, in fact, its about one of my favorites. This has just been bugging me:confused:

Is he out for five days? I looks to me in most of the shows I've seen that he is only out for 2 nights, as opposed to the five - seven days of Les Stroud.

I think bear dose 2-3 nights or else they just cut alot out for his stupid horse catching and eating live animals acts.

this is the a bomb + scope + elephant poop!

Every English boy grows up with The Lord of The Rings trilogy in his background.

The rock and pool,
is nice and cool,
so juicy sweet.

Our only wish,
to catch a fish,
so juicy sweet!

I think he is given 5 days to find his way out, doesn't generally take him that long. Regardless, it can be done easily with a single cameraman.
