Bear Grylls strikes again !

"a positive role model for youth."

exactly and for that he gets a pass for all the hoked up shenanigans.

Never said the site quoted Grylls.

To me sure of context, here is the language, verbatim:

I did not think that they were referring to any "regiment" other than the one they expressly mentioned - the 21st(R), contrary to your contention that they meant the 22d and I was "unfairly" twisting the quotation. The members here will decide.

But rock on. And do have some blueberry pancakes.

The 22 SAS is known as "The Regiment". Look it up.

If the site never quoted BG as saying he served in "The Regiment", then you have nothing, as per usual.

One thing for sure this thread has like 3 conversations going on at once.....christ its like being at my house :D

I find Bears show entertaining but I am not any more likely to purchase crap any more than I am going to bite the head off a frog as I saw him do several evenings ago. Fortunely at this age I can now afford mid priced equipment. I can't afford the best but I can pass over the 10.00 plastic crap.

"Bear Grylls is not phony but he does host and act in a number of fictional entertainment survival shows for Discovery. I think that is part that confuses people. John Wayne was never in the military but people didn't have a problem with him acting in movies where the character is in the military".

Well said,It's all about marketing,I for one do find it entertaining my son is 13 yrs old we watch it together.we look forward to seeing what weird thing he'll eat next or extreme situation he'll navigate.I know full well from the shows beginnings that it is for entertainment. What it has done is got my son interested and stay interested in survival. He can see the extreme some people have to take to survive. My son works out all the time he wants to go into special forces when he gets older but remember he is still 13;) no matter what people think about Bear he shows a positive role model for youth.look at all the sports figures that have fallen.show me 1 positive role model for youth that is mainsteam and famous.sorry got off on a tangent

+1, he is a better role model then Snookie or any of the other jackwagons on jersey shore./

If it means a large chunk of the poulation goes out and purchases gear and starts them thinkin about survival and looking after themselves then this must be a good thing.

We all started somewhere and over time found the gear that we liked and developed our own systems.

Bear Grylls has indeed done more than most of us will ever do, I respect that!

However, when they die horribly from following the advice, I want to make sure they have some nicer kit to pick up from them.

Lots of people climb mountains. Most of those people cannot afford to climb Everest. Edward M. Grylls, born with a silver spoon in his mouth, was able to flit about in the Himalayas when most people would be working to earn a living. Great for him, but hardly worthy of any hero worshiping.

IIRC, ~1,000 people have reached the summit of Everest, with ~200 dying in the process. There are dozens of mummified bodies still in the death zone. So, "lots of people" have climbed Everest, but that does not make the accomplishment less than impressive.

He was born into an affluent family? So what? Instead of being a spoiled playboy, he joined the army. He likes adventure. I respect the guy even though M vs W is often goofy.

Respect =/= "hero worship"

Jeez, some of you ladies are so sensitive when your "hero" is even questioned.

Let's see, there is video evidence of him staging some of his stunts all over the place.
Now he's put his name on a "survival knife" that is so superb that the pommel falls off during a BF review.

Lastly, and this is just disturbing, he seems to drink his own urine at any chance. You know at that point in the show he could just say "if your absolutely going to die from dehydration you could drink your own urine". Why does he feel the need to show that? I think most people could figure that out without the recurring demonstration.

On the positive side at least he's not wearing a fanny pack and riding a xooter. :)

In fairness, the pommel problem has been addressed by Gerber, or so they claim.

If you want to say MvW sucks or is silly that's a legit critique, but if you want to say he lied about his military time w/out anything logical to back it up, I'm gonna call BS. That's a very serious accusation [and IIRC, illegal in the UK].

What did I say about his military service?

Nothing. Your fishing for something I didn't say.

Frankly, I don't care if was Emperor of France. There just seems to be a mounting bit of evidence that he is an entertainer and very little else.

So is carrying a locking knife. Big deal.

No it wasn't you, it was that Linton guy. Sorry if I came across the wrong way there.

The preponderance of evidence is that of a experienced adventurer cashing in with an entertaining but unrealistic TV show.

"a positive role model for youth."

I used to be a middle school science teacher, so an argument could be made that I was a role model for youth. I even sponsored a hunting and fishing club.

I never taught them to drink their own piss.
