I watched some of his shows, I mean the guy really knows some shit, but he's doing a lot of things purely for entertainment purposes. Not to say that some of his advices aren't useful. Like demo on how to get out of quicksand or mud...

But yes, his shows are for entertainment purposes and I'm cool with that. He's fun to watch in all honesty.

He has a large fan-base and huge potential. And then what happens?
Then he teams up with Gerber 😐
And to make it worse, instead of being decent like Gerber Strongarm - his knife is shit. 😑
I mean, Gerber obviously still can make a decent blade... but they just won't 😂

I lost a lot of respect for him because he put his name on such a garbage and even made a sale pitch video for that POS.

I mean, some can argue he never actually used it, and that's possible... and still disappointing if he put his name on something he never used...

Number of companies he could have collab with:
ESEE
Cold Steel
Condor
Morakniv
Enzo/Brisa
Lionsteel
Boker

Or cheaper options:
Real Steel
Ruike

But no, he went with Gerber and made POS.
If he made a decent knife, I'd likely get one, just because it's BG knife, but this is overpriced garbage. And I won't buy garbage.

I'm making this thread after my friend bought one thinking it's a good knife... I'll gift this fella a Mora for Christmas, so the guy has an actually good knife...

Buy the knife not the story.

Buyer beware.

There’s a sucker born ever minute.

A fool and his money are soon parted.

I could go on and on. Your friend was taken advantage of but he is at least partially to blame.

Point being don’t trust someone trying to sell you something. Do your own research make informed choices. Live and learn.

Moras or Cold Steels make great low cost gifts. :)

Bear Grylls being a brand ambassador of ESEE would have been pretty dope.

I will say this about Bear and his knife. By teaming with Gerber, he kept the price down to $30something for the basic knife. That is something that many youngsters (probably a good chunk of his following) and their parents can afford. Could other companies get at that price point? Probably yes. Gerber also makes multi-tools and other products so Gerber has a more ... diverse? .. product range then some of the other companies.

Hopefully some of those kids who bought a knife put down the Xbox/PS controller and went out and did some camping/hiking/etc. That is a good thing. As those kids get older, hopefully they will learn about quality and move on to an ESEE, Condor, etc.

Heck, I started my camping/hiking adventures with a Rambo style, hollow handle, POS knife that popped up in the 80s.

Yes, a Mora costs half of what his knife costs but the average kid/parent isn't familiar with that brand. Let's face it, the whistle, fire starter, instruction booklet (not sure how good it is) provide some *coolness* factor.

I just hope some of those folks don't try some of the riskier things Bear has done and they get some proper instruction on how to use the knife.

First of all Gerber capitalizes on the celebrity name, then a cool catchy model name, then looks and color, then advertising hype and at a low price . All of that without regard to the blade steel, geometry, materials or design, just made cheap by the lowest bidder to build it.
They know the general public doesn’t know what makes a good knife so they make something they know is appealing to the general public and will last maybe long enough for a weekend camping trip. They can sell millions of them and most buyers won’t know the difference and the ones that figure it out just go buy another cheap knife that looks cool.
Gerber has been using the Bear Gryllis for several years and I’ve seen plenty BG knives that fell apart or just tossed in a box for a garage sale. I’ve seen lots of teenagers buy the set sold at the wallstore then abused, broken and wrecked. I doubt most are never returned for warranty or replacement.

If you only have $XX to spend it’s a knife.
I’m sure the exchange section would be money better spent. There are companies like Civivi, CJRB, and others that will get you a good fixed blade under $100

Let's keep the language "family friendly" in the General Forum so as not to offend other members.
I mean, BG knife is like drinking your own piss. You sure could do it, but shouldn't if there's any alternative.

If I was BG - I would at least first take a product and test it before putting my name on it.

Even basic googling about steel and manufacturers can give you enough info to make a decent knife, showing that he just doesn't give a fuck.

So what exactly is wrong with the " blade steel, geometry, materials or design,"?
What would you have done to improve the knife?
For the record: I'm not defending Gerber: I'm just looking for a factual reason for the diatribe...

If you were expecting to come here to just crap on some cheap big box store fixed blade, I don’t think you’ll find many supporters. We typically need specifics to discuss. You won’t find me joining in with the “har har my friend bought a Gerber and it’s a piece of garbage” talk. Have you ever held an LMF II? I see no issues with it. Quality piece.

I'm talking about BG knife. And I already said that Gerber can make a decent blade - Armstrong is a good example.

So, what's the point of this comment?

I've seen plenty of terrible reviews on BG knife, everyone is welcome to share their experience with BG knife here, and this thread could either prove me wrong, or save someone from making mistake.

But if someone wants BG knife purely for the sake of owning it - that's cool too.

Can you tell us why the knife is a POS?
Or is this simply an anti-Gerber thing?

Seems pretty well documented. There’s also the DBK video linked above - they also conclude POS.

If these were being marketed as hunting knives or even camping knives I wouldn’t have such a big problem, but these are specifically marketed as SURVIVAL knives.

Completely unacceptable and could actually get somebody killed. I’ll never buy Gerber just because of this - they’re obviously motivated only by profit.

Specifics. Specifics as to why it is garbage would be helpful. Is it the tang? Steel? Sheath? Is the fact that someone thinks BG is a tool relevant? I don’t think. Celebrities will endorse lots of things for $$$. So what specifically about the knife in question do you think makes it “garbage”?

I’m not going to go watch a bunch of YouTube reviews. If someone thinks a knife is garbage, they should be able to explain why in 2-3 sentences.
