Bear Grylls ultimate knife... or ultimate failure?

Yes, the OP should reinvent the wheel when there is plenty of existing evidence to support his position:rolleyes:
jlauffer jlauffer Actually yes, the OP should explain why they think the knife is “garbage” instead of relying on someone to come along and dump a bunch of YouTube videos and expecting all of us to watch all of them. The OP said the knife was garbage but didn’t state why. The onus is on the OP to make their case. You don’t agree?

You asked why and then refused to watch the evidence provided. I completely understand not wanting to watch through a bunch of YouTube videos, but it's absurdly entitled to demand evidence, be provided evidence, then refuse to look at it while still insisting that you're owed some explanation. At that point it certainly looks like you're just demanding someone spoon-feed you rather than bringing up any real objection.

You really think it isn’t possible to explain in a short paragraph why the knife is garbage? This isn’t YouTube, it’s a knife forum… where people write things. It isn’t a dumping ground for homework assignments like watching a handful of video clips.

Why are you pretending it is really so difficult to write it out? I’m not “demanding evidence”, but I’m asking “why”. If YOU think a knife is garbage, YOU should be able to explain WHY. I’m not asking for a 15 page report. Just a summary. You probably could’ve effectively explained it to us in less words than you’ve used in your little beef with me you’re engaging in here.

You asked why, multiple people answered in a variety of different ways and you continue to throw a tantrum because they won't do it in a way that you find acceptable. Hell, it was done in a single written sentence for you earlier in the thread.

Lol no one here is throwing a tantrum except the person having a meltdown because I won’t watch a bunch of YouTube videos and shut up about the knife.

So again, I ask you:
Can you objectively explain why the knife is “garbage”? Or are you going to keep going with the “go watch YouTube videos” line? If you don’t want to answer because I’m the one asking, maybe someone else can ask you.

Since you seem to struggle with reading replies I've collected a few for you explaining this.
It’s a SURVIVAL knife that appears quite easy to BREAK.

Pretty sure it's the easily breaking. I don't particularly care how good the heat treat or steel quality is in my survival knife if it breaks in normal use.

I 100% agree. Something heavily marketed as survival knife with a name of survival icon on it should be damn near indestructible.

Blade shape is OK, if it was executed as Boker Plus Outdoorsman - there would be 0 complaints. And 50-60 or even 70€ would still be acceptable, especially if it comes with sharpener, ferro rod and manual in the sheath pack.

Plain carbon steel or Sandvik would be the way to go with that knife at that price range.

You still don’t get it, so this will be my last response to you: All knives will break if you abuse them, some break when you don’t. WHY the knife breaks is the root cause of the issue. Poor steel? Heat treat? Abuse by the owner? Something else?

I’m sorry but “Derr it broke, stop asking why” isn’t going to fly with me… and I’m a little surprised you seem to be bashing me for asking the OP to explain why the knife is garbage instead of asking the OP why they think the knife is garbage. Actually, no, I’m not surprised.. but that’s another story. Have a good day :)

Maybe you could watch the provided videos and you would find out why. I'm not surprised that didn't occur to you, but here we are. Have a good day

You may think this knife is a piece of shit, but I am pretty sure if it were the only knife on you in a life or death SURVIVAL situation you would do everything possible to make sure you babied it after all your life depends on it

If the OP had included those videos in his post, his "onus" would have been more than satisfied, yet you admit that you won't watch them, so doesn't really matter who posted them. The evidence is clear, and like they say, a picture (video in this case) is worth a thousand words. Not the OPs fault you'd rather argue about it than see the proof for yourself.

Exactly. I’d take it if I needed it. It has a fire starter and sharpener. Surely it will get the job done as long as people aren’t batoning with it.

The OP said the knife was garbage.
The OP should explain why.
People coming along to add comments are not the OP. They don’t speak for the OP.
Youtube clips take a lot of time to watch. I’d prefer if someone thinks the knife is trash, they EXPLAIN why instead of posting videos of people abusing the knife until the point of failure.

I think we are at an impasse and I think it doesn’t have a lot to do with the topic and more to do with something else. I don’t think you would have the same reaction if I started a thread calling a knife “garbage” with zero explanation... and that’s truly sad. If you’re just going to argue against whatever position I take, what’s the point?

Have a nice day :)

I watched them...
And I'll admit that the videos show a lot of breakage.
But if you buy into the marketing of a knife at that price: you'll spend a lot of time being disappointed.

This is true.

But it'd be waaaay easier with an actual knife that's worth a damn.

Mora Robust and your regular lighter would be leagues ahead of BG knife. Ferro rod is cool and everything, but IMO it's dumb not to toss a lighter in your pocket just in case if you go somewhere like that. It costs less than 1€, it's compact, light and it works, and anyone is skilled enough to use it. Ferro rod is good, but adding a lighter too cannot hurt.

If I wanted cheap survival kit, I'd just buy Mora Robust, stick fallkniven D3T on the sheath, and get few lighters for the price of BG knife and call it a day.

Exactly. You get what you pay for. Some people expect to buy a $20-$30 knife that says “survival” on it and act surprised when they can’t baton it through branches or split logs in half. It’s a gerber you can buy at Wally World, not an Esee Junglas. The sort of person that knife is marketed toward isn’t climbing Everest or hunting Kodiaks in Alaska.

The OP should explain why.
I'm amused that after all this time and all these reviews this needs any explaining.

The knife doesn't hold an edge and is still fragile, serrations are breaking off, handle is falling apart...

I mean Gerber itself produces a lot of garbage, but they do still make few decent knives.

Problem with this knife is heavy marketing as survival knife, when it's just garbage. I mean, it's better than not have anything, but for the price of it you still can get a decent knife. Which could make a life saving difference.
