Bearded axe vs. jawed axe ???

Indeed. I've long been wanting of the right term for the extension of the toe.

Correct or not if one used a term like "extended toe" I would think anyone who knew what the toe refers to on an axe head would visualize what was meant by it.

I believe I would wonder which direction the toe was extending. I should have said, "Flaring of the toe upwardly, resulting in a lengthening of the cutting edge."

John Neeman makes some amazing tools. I've only gotten to use his framing chisels, but they were great to work with. I'd love to get one of his broad axes. For now, I'll stick with my old Plumb, until I save up.

Square peg,
I enjoyed this thread and hope I didn't go overboard with my opinion. I like a good terminology discussion. The term for a significantly flared toe is still unknown if we reject Mr. Beaudry's usage. I think goosewing might imply both the beard and the flared toe, but surely the flared toe feature has a name as well. Any other options?

I think I'll stick with jawed and bearded. It makes sense. And it looks right.

You say to-may-to, I say to-mah-to.
