Becker BK-7

I've had my eye on a BK7, I can't wait to see how the rest of this review turns out

And I like that you have a plain and simple in-hand shot within your first 3 pics by the way :)

I'm heading into town to get breakfast in the morning and looking around for some shots for the urban thread and then hitting the woods for the rest of the day. I'm sure I'll come up with something to do with it while I'm out there ;)

At PWYP last week Ethan had brought a bunch of different models to be given away and or sold. I missed out on the opening of the trade blanket to pickup a Bk-9. (It was going for a song.) They sold out quick. I did end up getting one 2 days later after the give away. (I was hoping to win one, but didn't.) Someone won one, but already had one so I ended up buying it from him. (Cheap I might add.) I already have a Camillus Crewman & Bk-7. The Ka-Bar BK9 I picked up also had the Bk13 knife. I haven't had a chance yet, but I need to compare the handles on the Camillus to the Ka-Bar, because I do believe the Ka-Bar's are thinner.

As for the BK13, it is a longer blade than on a Bark River Mikro Canadian, but the handle is shorter. (The Bark River is the only other small fixed blade I have that I can compare it to.) I'll try and put a photo up comparing the two tomorrow.

Photobucket finally started working again so I swapped out the pics and made them a little bigger.

Nice review. Any ideas on how to tighten up the blade in the inner molding?

If that sheath is the same as the ones that Camillus used when they made the Beckers the liner is held in the sheath with a little spot of what looks like hot melt glue.
You can pretty easily break that glue spot with a putty knife or something similar & then remove the liner & heat it up to get a better fit to the blade.
Then just glue it back in the sheath.
If you can't get it out of there,or just don't want to screw with it,you can stuff a little piece of webbing or similar material all the way down into the bottom of the liner & that will keep the blade from rattling too.

I had a camillus BK7 for a bit Which ai mistakenly parted ways with... THe Kabar version is my next purchase.. (great all around survival blade.)

So are the BK7 and BK9 thinner than the BK2?
Kabar website lists the shorter BK2 as being heavier at 1.0 pounds,
The BK7 is listed as only 0.85 pounds.
The BK9 with 3.5 inches more blade length than the BK2 is listed as 1.05 pounds, thats only 0.05 pounds more than the BK2.
(as an aside i wish they just list them in ounces and maybe grams for those of us metrically inclined, lol!)

Great review by the way!

Yeah...definitely big enough to be usefull. think I'd much rather skin small game with it than the BK7, the BK9 comes with it too I think and I think it would definitely make smaller chores easier in that instance.

Glad to hear that, I think I'll be checking out the BK-9 sometime in the future. Now I really want to check out that BK-2

My wife bought me the BK-9 for our Anniversary and Father's Day (after I was bummed about having to cancel my original order with Two Wolves). I've got quite a few snapshots of it in action. Everything from taking apart pressure treated wood and chopping through three inch tree branches to making the parts for a figure four trap.

I tried the little BK-13 (the companion knife), but found the edge lacking, the handle too short and too hard on the fingers for any kind of a chore knife (so I'd say it'd be smart to still keep your favorite SAK in your pocket). But once I sharpened it up, it seemed like it'd make an excellent small game or bird/trout knife.

The handle on the BK knife is nowhere near as blocky and fat as the pictures make it look. It works very well with the weight and form of the knife.

The BK9 is actually pretty easy to wield, with the right hand grip and use of a lanyard you can get it to do a lot of finer work.

If the BK-7 is half as useful as its big brother, then it's one helluva knife. Having the BK9 is actually making me seriously consider the BK2.

As quick as I get the pictures on my laptop from my camera I'll put them up here.

The BK-2 is much thicker than the BK-7 (I have both), and I believe the BK-9 is the same thickness as the BK-7.

"metrically inclined"???? Speak for yourself!!!!! (Damn Trudeau )

I found that inserting a thin strip 1/4" or so of styrofoam pool noodles has taken all the play out of my BK7 sitting in the sheath. Now it sits snug no play.

Interesting, does the BK2 have a .25 inch blade or even thicker?

Thanks all for the input on tightening up the sheathe.

The BK-2 has a blade thickness of .25 inches (one-quarter of an inch). As you've already found out, the handles are much, much more comfortable than they appear in most photographs, which makes using this hefty blade a pleasure. I've owned and have been using knives since I was about eight years old (I'm in my mid sixties now), and the BK-2 is the best all around knife that I have ever used -- and that's saying something. The knife weighs 14 ounces, which is pretty heavy for a five-and one quarter inch blade, but it's oh so solid. Someone said you could use it to baton through a Buick. My feeling is that after disposing of the Buick, it will still whittle sticks and cut up lunch.

Try it, you'll like it.

Cool, thanks for the input, I'll have to give it a go.
