Worked on the 62 mod a bit last evening. Grinding is slow going.

And grinding, and grinding, and grinding....

NOT!

Not my intention at all, but rather to throw ya's all off, haha. :D

Anywhos, on with it. You've all seen photos of what it looked like when I got it. Some of these indoor photos suck.

Here she is before:

Scales off:

You can really see how the upper scale is more rough/dry than the other:

One sanded:

Both sanded:

I took a screw, and key and distressed the wood:

I then took some Watco Danish oil, and applied it:

First coat:

Second coat:

Meanwhile, while that's soaking in, time to put a patina on it:

My secret concoction. Not really, it's yellow mustard, with coarse ground horse radish, with a little apple cider vinegar for darkness:

Dabbed it on:

I took photos of it when it was done and put back together, but I wasn't satisfied with the darkness of the scales. I wanted it darker. Didn't know how it would work, but I stained it after it already had the danish oil on it. Seemed to work fine.

First coat:

to be cont...

Result:

Second coat:

Red Mohagany was the darkest stain I had, so I rolled with it:

My intent for this whole mod, was to simply make it look older. I think I somewhat pulled it off.

The results. I also distressed the leather sheath, to age it, although I didn't take photos of the process. Also, the sun didn't cooperate during the photo session:

Close up of the handle. Was wanting it darker, but it is what it is:

Really like how the patina turned out:

Patina on the edges too:

Other side. I didn't stress the back of the sheath. Patina not as good as the other side, but I still like it:

Few randoms:

Sheath:

Not exactly as I pictured in my mind, but still fairly happy with the way it turned out.

Thanks for looking.

Nice job on the patina Dubz and I really like the way the scales turned out.
Nice work!
Thanks man.

splatter a little coffee or wood stain on the leather for a more random aging. love the work. I might be tempted to shorten the blade a little and make a rustic sheath.
but I am slightly insane.
Cool idea. Thanks man. Believe me when I say I thought about grinding it down to a 4" blade. Crossed my mind several times, but didn't wanna mess it up.

Looks great ... I had thought about sanding and distressing the wood some myself ... but I've never forced a patina ... always too lazy and just let it do what it does ... but after seeing this and several other forced patina threads ... I may actually try it ...

but it turned out great ... looks like a good companion that's been a mike ot two on your hip.

Thanks man. Easy mod really. Nice thing is, I don't have to worry about getting it all scratched up now, haha.

lol guess that's one way around that not wanting to use it afraid you'll scratch it up that some folks have.

it all just gives it character anyway so a few scratches and dents just make them look loved and well used
I was looking at some of the photos of Ethan's original Colclesser model, and that's what gave me the idea to do this. I knew I couldn't make it look exact obviously, but still made it look older. Some dirty hands should darken those scales right up with use.

The metal finish looks great. Now it needs thick custom Micarta/G10/CF scales to make it pop.
Thanks man. I think the wood definitely looks more retro. I may do yet another mod to it. Something I've been thinking about for awhile now. Didn't have the stuff to do it, but that can always change.

now you have me thinking about not only shortening the blade and aging it but making new/old scales and pinning them on.. you are a trouble maker for sure. o_O
