Becker BK9 surface rust on first day of use

No problem man. That BK9 will serve you well. It's my favorite, and most used blade. Keep using it, and it will look like this in no time:

Is that an illusion or has it developed a slight recurve?

Iron oxide happens in one of two ways. First is slow oxidation, which is what you saw on your blade. Second is rapid oxidation, which is what happens while cutting with an oxy-acetylene torch. Aluminum oxidizes within minutes, or faster.

i like using ballistol or silicone spray on the blade. heck, spray some in the sheath too ;)

I do use ballistol as well, but I'm getting tired of the smell lol

I see a lot of people are recommending beeswax. I think I'll give that a try

I swear by renaissance wax for my many carbon steel blades, several are Beckers. Keeps rust away. I’ll also use a little light oil after a day out in the rain.
It’s expensive. I have it around for small leather and wood working projects. A $20 tin of it lasts many many years.

stop using it as lube :D

I left one of mine in the rain and snow for about a month, by mistake of course, and the non coated area(basically just the edge) had a surface layer of rust spotting covering half of one side and less than 2 inches on the other. 10 minutes of using it on wood and the rust was all but gone. basically only the side facing down, in more or less constant contact with moisture, had noticeably rusted. And this rust was cleaned off just by chopping. It’s good stuff, crovan, but not stainless.

I left it on the back porch (3 season deal - but not a good place to leave a knife for a month). I've already cleaned it up; but I decided to strip it tomorrow (because I don't have any stripper left at the house, and am not going to the store until this evening)

Aiiiiii
I grew up in rural Western Australia on a self sufficient property. Knives are made to be used/abused. One of the reasons I love me a good becker.
Awesome man. And welcome to the Becker forum, glad to have you here.
