Becker Brute

I have both, and I feel they chop pretty much the same. The KaBar BK9 is lighter, and seems faster, making up for the reduced mass. When you baton wood, the Brute leaves the BK9 in the dust. It seems like the weight really drives into the end grain better, and the added thickness really ssems to aid in splitting. I also feel better about applying torque to a 1/4 thick blade than I do a 3/16" blade when it gets stuck.

I would probably make the Camillus a safe queen if I had a KaBar BK1 to abuse...at least until the zombies attack.:D

I would buy a few myself! Maybe there's a chance that they'll do a limited run for the devoted fans of the Brute. We could even do a mass pre-order here! What do ya'll think about that?

I would buy at least 2 KaBar made Becker Brutes. Bring back the Brute. While your at it bring back the Machax.

per Ethan and KaBar, not going to happen, nope, naddah

now the Magnum Camp on the other hand, that's a go...

and the MachAx... mmm MMM mmm

It's too bad they can't bring out what we really want. The Brute gives many choppers out there a run for their money.

yeah, can't have everything... but at least we can have new stuff!

the MachAx with the proper original profile can make the chips FLY as well. in fact, if you dig a little for the picture, a bend MachAx looks a lot like a Brute. MMM :)

plenty of makers have blades like the Brute, with great steels, and prices better than used Brutes :)

i already have one, it is a beast i love that blade. but would take another if they came available.

Not a big fan of the MachAx, but I'm sure it works well for those who are. Looks too much like a Kukhri for my tastes. I have a Busse Fusion Battle Mistress and it is a chopping machine. But staying in true form of a knife addict, I am never completely happy.:o So the Brute makes perfect sense for me to dote over.;)

i'm a lover of the khukri... and i've got a model called a Bonecutter, that puts almost everything i've chopped with to shame, except a proper axe for large project.

imho, ounce for ounce, inch for inch, a forward design will outchop something that's "behind the curve". thus: a khukri will outchop a bolo, what's not to like?

apparently, the more forward the curve, the more choppy and the more behind the curve, the faster and more slicey... khukris vs sabers for instance. i don't know the science, but 3000 years of blade history shows these preferences?!

that said, a MachAx is really not terribly forward compare to some Khuks, but the chopping power, is extremely impressive for the size. as a rather dedicated Becker collector, i can say with full opinion, the MachAx is ... perfect :) course, i do like the Brute, but it's a lesser blade imho.

picture borrowed from: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7554930&postcount=8 photoshop hack to show similarities between the Brute and the MachAx:

so there ;)

Oh, I don't doubt you or the MachAx, but aesthetically I still prefer the Brute. As far as kukhris and like blades, it's not just that I don't like the design (yes, I've swung a couple) it's also too weight forward for me. It feels like swinging a hammer to me and I have done that for far too many years. Carpal Tunnel and all that crap. I am not denouncing anyones preference, it just doesn't suit me. I'll still take a Brute someday.:)

preferences are good.

of course, i'm thinking that KaBar won't be making a Brute anytime soon, so if you want one, buy an original, or have another make provide you with a bolo of your choice.

the Brute is dead. long live the Brute.

just saying :>

I'm very similar. I like the Brute because of the forward weight design in a straight blade, without being "too much" like in the Machax. I like this for a big chopper knife. I had a HI WWII Khuk, but sold it because it just didn't feel natural for me, swinging a bent chopper like that. To me, the Brute bolo was the perfect middle ground between the BK9 and a Khukuri. My woods trio/quartet has gravitated towards axe/machete, folding saw, belt fixed blade, and multi-tool because I couldn't really get used to swinging a Khuk and it felt more awkward in my hands than a hatchet or an axe.
