Becker forum Knife?

Don't forget Cold Steel's Carbon V knives. Same stuff, same heat treatment as the Camillus Beckers.

I wasn't a fan of the Camillus heat treat, too irregular. Some good, some bad. Kabar will have their own thing going on, and that is aok in my book. Some Toooj-arific (real word, look it up) heat treatment means best BK10 ever.

I gotta start creating threads...
need a crewman in 0170-6c to go with my camillus tactool.

You talking about all of 'em or the ones coming out there at the end as things were falling apart?
My experience has rung true with what Phil posted...

Carbon V definately came first. It was the brainchild of the Metal God, Dan Maragni, & was, in my opinion, what put Cold Steel on the map all those years ago.

When Cold Steel came to Camillus to make their carbon steel knives, they did not want to pay for the vast amount of steel that had to be purchased in order to have a custom steel made to their specifications.
Consequently Cold Steel agreed that Camillus could also use the steel (& pay them a royalty, I believe) but could not call it Carbon V.

I came up with the name 0170-6C, based on an almost close (but NOT) steel produced by Sharron Steel called 0170-6.

All this is historical trivia.

The real issue for those who understand is Heat Treatment!

The reason that the Camillus Beckers perform so well is that Dan Maragni set up a system of heat treatment at Camillus for the Cold Steel knives, & oversaw almost every batch of knives produced. What we learnt about heat treating Cold Steel seeped over to the Becker knives.

For me, the only ones that were good were the "middle" runs. I mean, their heat treat was a guy holding a rack of knives in a lead dip for x amount of seconds, then pulling them. What if he was hung over, fightin' with his 'ol lady, or chasin' some tail on the factory floor. Just too inconsistant.

I don't follow on "middle runs," but every Camillus Becker user I own performs well. Aside from one BK-7, I didn't buy any of the production knives while Camillus was tanking. I do recall reading more complaints around that time as they were moving what they could out of the factory.

In the beginning, they were working out the bugs in the process, so, sometimes less than ideal HT. Then the golden years, when it was down to good HT. Then at the end, they fell off the wagon and went to hell. Some sites were selling BK7s for like $30. I know, I bought bulk. Some of the bulk buys would take a badass edge, some, would chip if you dropped it on new carpet. Not Beckers fault, but the labor unions were getting real pissy, and work was, um, less than union goodness?

I loved Camillus, but they fell off hard. I used to idolize the BSA knife, and had a few, but they soon fell behind to my Kabar and Becker knife turn.

Roger that. I knew there were issues with the late stuff. At that point, I was busy buying discontinued models (BK-5, BK-6), hard to find models (BK-2SG, BK-7SG) and older Beckers.

Will this be ready for me to give to myself for Christmas. I've been a verrry gooood boy this year.

Well, there's still a lot to do, so I wouldn't count on these for Christmas. We just mentioned this yesterday, so it could take a little while.;)

Santa is going to be angry!

It just seems that I always get involved with these things in the beginning and then again at the end when it's too late. I just don't want to miss out on this one.

Not nearly as angry as he would be if he found out about me and Mrs. Claus when she was vacationing here in San Diego this summer.;) Ooops . . . I wasn't supposed to mention that . . . my bad.

Don't worry, this thing is still a little ways off, so you won't miss out on it. We'll try to keep everyone informed, and make an announcement when the time is right.

Maybe instead of a Becker forum knife maybe just some Micarta handle slabs? That's seems like it would be more simple to make and more likely to happen. Maybe a custom color and have some image, word, or number burned into it.

What ever comes out I will be down with...

I'm working on becoming a beckerhead ASAP

I know that I haven't been around here too long, and I don't even own any Becker goodness yet, but I've liked Ethan's sharps since I first saw them on the internet a few years ago. One of those I particularly liked was the Crewman. So I'm in like Flint.

Now I just need to post loads of smileys and steal pics of someone else's Beckers so that I can get a number. Sweet!

I know we are still in Becker/Ritter heaven right now but any news on the crewman?

Say what you will but I'm a greedy Becker whore!

Also : wishing DB strength and good health.
