Beckerhead firearms

I think The second Scout I was thinking of May be a Mossberg Scout. I just remember looking at both and they were both very reasonably priced and well reviewed.

I would like to get a mossberg scout. Handled a patrol which is basically the same rifle with a different mount/sights. Not as smooth as the ruger but not as expensive either. The mag release is a little funky and stiff though.

I really want a gunsite scout, they just look like awesome rifles, and the fact that they have a left handed version is a huge bonus

Someone on here has a Ruger Gunsite Scout thats a nice bolt operated carbine, and then someone had a rifle that looked a lot like it, but it wasnt a Ruger. I cant remember what the second rifle was but it was also nice. Both pretty inexpensive all things considered.

I've got a GSR. Savage and Steyr also make scout rifles and a few companies (Mossberg, for instance) make rifles that aren't scout rifles but look like it - the Mossberg MVP comes to mind.

Here's my Ruger - I have hit targets out to 630 yards with my current setup (2-7x LER scope zeroed at 25 - shoots +- 3" out to 260 yards, give or take)...

So for the gun guys with more experience than me, is it worth owning a 30-06 instead of a .308 ? I know there is a noticible difference in penetration and power, but in that category would someone be better off with a Remington 700, or something like that ?
Or is a .308 enough to take down traditional big game like Elk, Moose, or Proper Bears?

I think it only makes a big difference once you get over 165 grain bullets. With 150's I think 308 is a little faster.
Neither really qualifies for any genuinely dangerous game-the 308 has an edge in that it's the standard NATO GPMG round, and is thus extremely plentiful. Not a lot of cheap '06 left.

I know there is a noticible difference in penetration and power ...
There is?!

30-06 is better at long range with heavy bullets but that's about it. But not anything you'd notice.

Under 300yd with heavy bullets, yes.

Otherwise, I'd prefer 7mmRM, 300WM, 338WM for such large game.

Based purely on online research not personal experience. 06 punched through type 3+ Ar500 armor plate, .308 did not. I assumed that meant that 06 had greater penetration and power in general, but maybe it only applies to a hard target like armor.
25-45 seems pretty hot, but I am thinking its going to be less plentyfull, and more expensive for a while still, since its new.

No well-rounded gun collection is complete without a good ol' wood stocked bolt action "ought-six". But mostly for the nostalgia factor.

Comparing similar factory hunting ammo, as in these Remington charts, there's only a ~3% difference in velocity and ~7% difference in energy between the 30-06 and 308 with the same bullet.

The 30-06 and 308 use the same bullet. The 30-06 holds more powder, +12gr/21%, which only makes a significant difference with heavy bullets at long ranges.

If you do your part a .308 will do anything a 06 will and in a shorter rifle.
It will do more then the 25-45 sharps. The sharps is nice in a AR

Thats what I thought too, but when Demolition ranch demo'ed a AR 500 armor plate that was type 3+ the 308 barely dinged it, and the 06 punched clean through. I may have to watch it again. It may have been an issue of range, or heavier ammo, but it was clearly penetrating better.

Just buy yourself an A-10 Warthog and use it's gun.

To be clear, I dont need to shoot through armor. I was just surprised by the outcome and wondering what the prefered hard hitter is.
smh

Did you notice that the first 30-06 shot with (presumably) common ammo did not penetrate?

It was only when he switched to ARMOR PIERCING ammo in the 30-06 bolt action riflet that he got penetration! Guaranteed, 308 "Black Tip" ammo will also penetrate that armor plate just as well.

Also ...
~ bolt action rifles don't bleed energy like gas operated actions thus more bullet velocity/energy out of the bolt action
~ the longer barrel of the bolt action also develops more bullet velocity/energy than shorter barrels

When comparing calibers, you must use the same kind of rifle and ammo. Otherwise it's apples v oranges.

Thank you TravisH, thats one of the reasons I was asking in here, because I was kinda surprised by the results. You answered my question perfectly.
