baby sharksnake. they're attracted to the smell of blood. the big ones will be along shortly, so barricade your doors and windows.

turns out I'm NOT behind on hunting season. I swung by the bait shop at lunchtime and he expects deer tags tomorrow, and the printed annual abstracts aren't out yet either.

Thanks again folks.

Question for you ammo hand loaders/ reloaders out there:

- Is it worth handloading these days? I think I'll stick with factory 22, but I want to hand load my own 9 (124g), 45 (230g), 556 (undecided g), and 12 gauge 00.
- How much would a starter set up cost? I am willing to pay a little more for quick/ efficient loading.
- how much time does it take to load 1000 rounds?

Thanks!

Don't even think of reloading 22LR. Not worth your time, for what you can buy it for.

How much does it cost to get started? Depends, the fastest, and most is expensive is a progressive loader. Load your materials, pull the handle, out spits shells with each pull. Start up cost, ball park for the device, dies, power, brass, lead, primers, and the whole shebang, about a grand. That should get you 1000 of more, depending on the amounts of material you buy.

The cheap side, Lee Classic loader. Total investment, about $350, for a 1000 rounds.

Progressive loader- 1000 rounds should take about an hour, or less, depending on your speed.

Manual Loader- a weekend.

I use a Lee classic loader for my 45 and 308, as I build specific rounds for specific purposes. You can do the same with a progressive, just have to change your loading material.

For my own use, I'll load 45 and 5.56, because I still see good savings on those. 9mm would probably save me some money, but I don't shoot enough of it to put the time in.

The Lee Turret press is a great budget-level setup that can get you somewhere around 150-200 per hour, if you're being careful and not just rushing the rounds through. Some day I'll upgrade to a Dillon 550, but that's going to run around $900+ for a complete setup.

Thank you, gentlemen. I am leaning towards progressive loaders. An hour/week to spit out 1000 rounds gives me plenty practice rounds and will increase stockpile nicely, and still give me plenty time with the girls.

I was thinking of a Dillon setup, they have an attractive warranty. I would not mind more recommendations, though! :D

RockChucker makes the best in IMHO, but that's just me. I've used Dillion, Lee, and RC (RockChucker), and I really like the RC. Tough, sturdy, and well thought out. Dillion and lee are good to, but I just like the RC better.

Lee single-stage and turrets are good. I absolutely hate their progressives!

I like my Lee single-stage, but my Lee turret has indexing issues as the engineering in the indexer is lousy. Now I just turn it by hand. It's marginally slower, but no debugging.

Jeez how was I supposed to know butter knives are supposed to be dull? Ungrateful woman.

Been waiting 2months for something to show up so I can do a chop off I have been curious about. Still waiting. Any tips on sharpening the machax by hand? I have diamond stones but they won't get into the recurve. May need to invest in one of the smaller lansky or similar systems for it I guess.

Funny you mentioned that sky. I just got done sharpening our kitchen knives here. All are razor sharp. I mean that. I almost lost a finger. Im prepairing to get bitched out in a few hours when somebody cuts there finger or what have you.

One of these days, when I have some surplus money, I'm going to order the Rockchucker Kit.
It goes on sale at Midway from time to time. I just don't have the space for reloading right now.

fuel for the Beckerhead fitness challenge:
15.52mi road ride with one cat-5 climb (about 50% hills...) at 17.6mph for a total ride time of 00:53.
One gear: 42:16.
I want to get that down to an even 50 minutes in the next two weeks. it's gonna be tight...

Can anyone recommend a decent, smallish flashlight for daily carry? Not wanting to spend tons here. I carry a multi-mode mag-lite now. I like it okay, but was wanting something a bit shorter.

I've got a coleman I picked up at Smallfart that's been a good one.

Fenix E01 is one of the staples I have seen, runs off a AAA.

I like my Surefire 6PLED a lot. it's a bit bigger than small, but quite a bit smaller than large. I made a leather sheath for it. High quality. High price, but I had a gift certificate. :D No matter what you get, make sure it has some flat faces on the bezel or somewhere so it doesn't roll off surfaces. I hate that. The 6P takes special expensive batteries, but the LED model runs a LONG time on 'em, so it's not a big deal as long as you keep one spare set around.

Nice, but more than I wanna spend. Unless, of course, you wanna send me a gift certificate. ;) :D

I really like the streamlight Microstream. Only $20 bucks.

Nice Mauz, but too small. I want at least an AA size.

I have a Fenix LD10 riding left butt cheek. AA battery. High is 100ish lumens, I use the regular 50ish lumens more often. I like how the butt is flat, you can stand it up and have it act as a torch and light up the room. $50ish from the river merchant.
