so @oxide...

$500+ is to blow... yeah :) my advice:

1) shop around and wait to buy a MODERN complete computer - building one can be a nightmare using parts older than 2-3 years, esp if you want performance... a studly core box is much easier to buy the way you want it setup. RAM is so cheap right now that 16GB is probably the way to go as well. HD? get a boot/OS SSD, and then a 1-2 TB storage drive. CPU? whatever. they're all fast now. multi-core? sure? 4 or 8 way.

short form: don't waste money cobbling something up from bits. not worth it. also: no resale value.

2) pack? if you like it, buy it. probably good resale value.

3) climbing gear? buy the absolute minimum you need. as you say, it has a shelf life. no resale value :)

4) xbox? hell yes. though, don't buy all those games at once, *and* consider shopping around your local game stores for flawless used copies, esp online (see amazing river), or other outlets. that $50-70 new game will be $10 in a year. some of the older ones you mentioned can be bought new for $10 they're so old, otherwise, used? it's optical media. as long as you got the instructions, and a scratch free disk... just buy incrementally. resale value: low, but there. as well, since selling games is "such a lose", i never do. keep them forever. $2 for that $50 game? i'd rather have it for fun, trade, or lending down the road.

basically, i'm suggesting some mix and match here. you don't need to initially buy "blow out" packages in each category.

I had some lays BLT potato chips recently. Didn't get a hint of bacon taste though. Mostly grease and salt flavor....

Mmmm....BLT.

Next time you should make a BLT and then put some of the BLT chips in the sandwich. Who doesn't enjoy chips in their sandwich? No one I'd want to share a sandwich with...

Blue Raspberry Bacon flavored Popcorn.

Oxide, I vote you shrink the height of your .sig or buy me a bigger monitor.
Oh wait, make that two - they have to match.

The nightmares are true, but the problem I have with buying a pre-built computer is you pay twice as much for what might be equal, and you have to put up with the manufacturer crap software, granted it comes with all the drivers, I still don't see myself buying a complete computer capable of displaying a game for less than $1000.

Now, that being said, I haven't seen the prices for everything recently, but I still doubt I'm going to get a decent graphics card from a "custom" pc from someone like HP (refuse to get Dell, just no).

2) pack? if you like it, buy it. probably good resale value.

I have no intentions of reselling it, I really need a quality pack, without the ability to go overboard.

3) climbing gear? buy the absolute minimum you need. as you say, it has a shelf life. no resale value :)

My thoughts exactly.

Well, I can honestly live with halo 1 and 2 and I'll just pick up halo PC for $10, but the rest I "need" asap. :D

Hey oXide, just out of curiosity, are you looking for shoes, and do you wear size 10.5ish US? I've got a brand spanking new pair of Five Ten Hornets that don't quite fit me (I wear size 11 US) that I could sell you if you wear 10's or 10.5. They're about a half size too small for me.

Also, if you shoot me your email address, I can send you an invite that will get you $10 off at a place that's got at least some good climbing gear and other outdoor gear. Same for anyone else who is interested. I get store credit for everyone who signs up (for free, btw), so it's worth it to me too :)

Size 12 4E (my feet make bigfoot's feet look small), which is why I have ruled out even looking at climbing shoes, but I'll shoot you an email so I can get that link.

But then wouldn't I need to find BLT potato chips with potato chips in the BLT that's put on the potato chips?

Just got in from the shop and got my shower. Been grinding knives tonight. Nothing like blowin out black snot a day and a half after a good grinding night. I wear a resperator and have a makeshift (redneck) dust collector and still can't keep the sh!t out of my nose. I assume its because I have facial hair and the resperator doesn't get a great seal. Shaving isn't a option due to it really makes me look sexy lol! Anybody got a remedy?

Todd, I put a wet towel under the wheel to catch some of the dust. Your setup may not let you do that though.
