Beckers, Bows and Arrows! Let's see your "stringed instruments" :)

^^^Nice! I'm impressed with trad shooters and hunters. Maybe I just never had a decent bow (but more than likely it was the operator  ) but I was never that accurate with a stick bow. Not that it wasn't fun shooting them - until I got my first compound.

Today was a little re-sighting. I have a 5 pin sight and was shooting the top pin at 20 yds.....but realized that I will NEVER try to shoot a target, much less an animal, at 60 yds. Figured I'd be better off with a 10 yard pin. Unfortunately, I'm not real consistent - so sighting in is gonna take a while....that, and the contact lens problem are the bane of my archery existence. Was shooting OK - not great - tonight until my contact lens started acting up. Then it was getting dark and I was getting frustrated, so....rather than lose an arrow or three, I went in for dinner.

Well, been meaning to post for a while, now - but I had a forced hiatus due to a minor bow explosion a few weeks back. My string broke around the peep and gave me a little forearm lashing. New string and cable upgrade (coupla weeks wait...), taking it in for setup, shooting a few times, taking it in again.....it's a long story (and I have to take it back again) but I don't have time to write it and you ain't gonna read it all, anyway. Been shooting some pretty good arrows from 30 yds., but I can't seem to maintain consistency at 20....

This happened at 30:

Second shot went right thru the top right fitting for the leg and buried into the shed. Took a shot to calm down and then I put three right on top of each other. Pretty big fail on that 2nd shot, tho. I'm not finding the time to shoot as much as I was a month ago. Less daylight, kids back in school disrupting the lazy summer dinner hours, etc./whatever......
I'll keep shooting when I am able, and I'm gonna see if I can rig up something quick and dirty to light up the targets - tho, low light shooting practice ain't a bad idea this time of year ;).....

i have not shot at all since the HOT AND NASTY weather

that's over...

should do some soon.

got a laser range finder, that might help... though i should get a bow that's calibrated in a way i can use that - they got these single peep reticles with click stops. you range your clicks, and voila.

maybe 2017. i have a medical expense coming up that would buy a SUPER FINE olympic quality target bow, and probably some left over for a canadian cnc crossbow.

mmm...

low and slow...

Deer season soon. Some good shooting there GSOM.

Thanks, friend. Still......I know next to nothing about the practical applications of shooting skills. Where to look, how to go about looking, where to set up, what to do after (should I be so luck as to be successful in my first year EVER of hunting).....

I did actually purchase my first deer hunting license ever a week or so ago. Got the turkey tag, too (though I missed the spring season, so it's like the opposite of a twofer).....on the theory that there are a shitload of turkeys around here - and I'm more likely to actually release an arrow at a bird than a mammal for my first kill. Won't know 'til I find out. But I'll keep you posted.

PSE Kingfisher 45# and good ol' BK5. Got it for bowfishing originally, but it's pretty fun to shoot with field points too. I'm thinking of going for turkey next year, should be good.

Been shooting my new bow exclusively since I got it. 53# at 28'' 60'' recurve.

Can't wait to hunt with it again.

Very nice man. I need to get a bow. I have an oldie, but never use it.

My main hunting tool is currently a compound bow.

When I'm in the mood for something more traditional, I shoot my old Fred Bear Kodiak Hunter.

That is fantastic! How do you get any work done with all your hobbies?! :D

Seriously though, what a cool setup and hobby, I have never thought of building my own arrows. I will have to post pics of my own gear here soon. Nothing too special as I only started bowhunting a few years ago, but I have loved every minute of it since I started.

Honestly, I haven't fletched in a while. I have bunches of arrows to shoot and most of them still have all their vanes. I am highly anticipating opening day of bow season here. Hopefully I can stick me a monster this year!

We would love to get back into 3D archery this season as well, but with super busy schedules nowadays, we just don't have the time to commit to a whole 3D season. We do still play COW with our bows in the yard sometimes though...

Can any one suggest a good starting bow (compound or regular) and cross bow that won't break the bank for deer hunting. I'll be throwing my BK 4 with my SP-51 in the deer pack this year with the BK 5. The BK 4 is nice and light and pretty versatile.

Well I highly recommend my samick sage can be had pretty inexpensively but it's a recurve...

When you're choosing your bow first decide compound or crossbow or recurve or longbow etc then we can prob help some more.... I'd also recommend going to like a bass pro shop and have someone there give you recommendations I know the one by my house the ppl there are very knowledgeable about bows

I only started archery hunting a few years ago but I found the best way to get gear cheaply and quickly is to peruse Craigslist and other classifieds. The reason I say that is there are numerous hunters and archery enthusiasts alike who end up buying all new gear, including their bows, every single year. Kind of the "have to have the latest and greatest" mindset.

Nothing wrong with that, especially since, as a result, they tend to sell their equipment for much cheaper than what it costs new and you are practically getting equipment that is still available on shelves due to how recently it was acquired. Since I rifle hunted prior to me getting into archery, I pretty much only needed to get the bow, arrows, and all archery related gear. I was able to find a brand new Bear (can't recall the model, I'll check on my lunch break) compound bow, equipped with upgraded Spot Hogg sight and arrow rest, a half dozen arrows with field tips, a Tru-Fire release, and a hard case for around $250 and all of it was practically brand new, had never been in the field. All I needed was some basic tools and some broadheads after that. Retail, all of that stuff was pushing $1000-$1200.

So yes, find the deals. Ideally, you want to look around summer time shortly before archery season starts up. That is when all the gear junkies will be selling their stuff and looking to "upgrade".
