Bedside Manners

Chris: It's a matter of preference. A gun under the bed can be found by someone else, or lost by me in the shuffle of trying to figure out who just invaded my space. Same with the bedside table. With it under the pillow, I know EXACTLY where it is, I can reach it quickly, and the BGIQ would have to move my head to get it. :D

E_G: Ooooh, no. You aren't getting THAT one out of me. I'll let Hollister tell ya. ;)

I really wonder about you guys sleeping with the gun under the pillow. That's really abnormal.

This coming from a guy who stuffs knives up "fuzzy animal" butts. :p

Yep - it pisses off the animal, tells it you probably really don't want to be its friend, and gets the knife all... icky. :D

I don't think hubby would appreciate that. Belay that. I KNOW he wouldn't appreciate that. AND, he might just say, well, if I let YOU do it to me, then you have to let ME do it to you. ;)

Wait, I missed that one. someone email me the explination.

I feel underarmed sleaping only with a civilian and a psark in my shorts.

Emerson_Girl:

Like you, I'm astounded at the amount of hardware our fellow Forumites carry into their dreams.

Like you, I also come from a country where the firearm laws are very stringent. Unlike the Blessed USA, in Canada it is considered a priveledge to bear arms and NOT a Right. Unfortunately, any use of a firearm against another person, aggressively or defensively, will only open a lengthy and harsh investigation. Unfortunately, the victim often becomes the one set under the microscope, (this from a person with a Law Enforcement background).

From personal observation, I have found that the majority of B & E's (break & enter) are solely commited for crimes against property. When confronted, the majority of intruders will run. Having said this, there exists the possibility that an intruder's sole purpose is to commit violent crime against the occupants (ie. home invasions or sexual predators). If the latter is the case, and you have chosen to defend yourself with an edged weapon, I would strongly suggest you make it a fixed blade. Under the circumstances, you will more than likely be at the disadvantage just having been woken up from a slumber. Time will be of the essence, and it will be easier to bring a fixed blade into battery rather than fumbling with a combat folder.

Once you have made the decision to defend youself (fight), do it with extreme aggression and get the hell out of that situation. During the course of the confrontation, inflict as much damage as is neccessary (possible) to prevent personal injury and leave.

This is a final suggestion, and probably one of the most important factors to consider once the incident is over. You may have just inflicted bodily harm on another person, regardless of whether it was done in self defence or not. You will be held accountable for your actions. Know what you are going to say and know how to articulate it.

Do not become a victim twice.

1. What's a gun?
2. I keep my CQC6 close to the bed, but out of reach, I would like my 3 year old son to reach 4....
3. My Surefire M6 with the 500 lumen bulb lives just under the bed, well within reach.

Ed

Welcome to the forums E-G....tis nice to see a female presence around these parts. :)

Bedside Manners eh?
Well my EDC is an Emerson Commander, so at night it goes on my headboard, right in between my glasses and one of my pistols (either a .45 or a 9mm.)
Sometimes I have a couple other folders laying up there.

I keep several sharp pointy things under my mattress, including (but not limited to) a non-metallic fighting hatchet (one of my own works), and a kukri (nothing special, just an in-expensive one I picked up at a gun show.)

And there is always a second hand-gun, a little pump action .410 bore shotgun, and a bolt action rifle within just a couple steps of the bed. And a small Bug Out Bag, with some basic medical/survival gear in it sits behind the door into the room.

Sheesh...if I've got all this stuff like this while I am still in my teens (and still living at home, how i can legally get away with posessing my "aresenal", i'm still under my parents roof and command, nd they says its cool.) Imagine the kind of gear I'll have at my disposal by the time I am 20 or 25.

Welcome aboard Emerson Girl.

I see you keep the same sleep habits I do. Or at least you are awake when I am and you keep stuff around you when you sleep too :)

I'd love to see some of the blades you created. If you have the time you should post them up for all of us to see.

Another thing is you'll love this forum. This is an awesome post and it makes me feel Not-unusual. Others on this board taking their protection pretty seriously makes me feel real good associating with them.

Now to answer your question..... Bedside manner, huh? My manners would probably scare all of you :)

Aside from all my leather and chain gear :D I have my two Commanders that I wear everyday within reach, a Mag-lite 5D cell flashlight, a 9P surefire flashlight that I wear everyday, A Lamey Scorpion fixed blade and a Busse basic 9 on the wife's side headboard, a 1911 in a lock box on the headboard that is worn everyday with 2 reloads, a Glock 23 or 19, and a cell phone.

I used to hide a level 2A vest underneath the bed along with a AR-15 outfitted with a Giles sling and a 9P surefire mount with a Trijicon reflex scope and a reload pouch on the buttstock but since we adopted our neice I decided it would be better left in the safe and if I needed to do something the handguns would suit us fine.

I've been known to actually fall asleep with my carry gear on coming home late at night and waking up with my knives and firearm and other stuff on my utility belt still on. If you have good gear it isn't a hassle or uncomfortable to carry it.

My wife used to think I went overboard with the stuff and training but she doesn't say a thing now after we had someone try and come into our house, around this time last year, while I was at work at 2am. I must have broken a landspeed record getting to my house...... I like to think I put a mild scare on the guy :D

Again welcome aboard,
Ross T.

I sleep with a cheap knock off sword under my bed which probably couldn't cut a thing but would hurt like hell to be hit with. I also have my Commander on my night stand and my AFCK in my dresser.
Great thread Emerson Girl, Welcome!

If a visitor decided to proceed past the alarms and the dog, they would be greeted by my wife’s S&W 66, a 4C cell Maglite and my ported, 7 shot 12 ga. Pump. I would also have access to a cell phone, 98 Commander, 99 BTS, Waved 7, Mini-Commander, and whatever other sharp toys I had been playing with that day.

Man, I gotta get one of those SureFires.

Sig P229 40 cal, Nite Sites, 3 12 rnd mags with Winchester Black Talon. Close by are Colt AR15, Benelli M3 and H&K SP89. I sleep real good! - Dick

Ok, I've got an question. With all the stuff that everyone has laying around. Have you ever trained to use any of it, like a simulation? I mean, supplemented your regular bedside armourment for trainers (guns, knives, swords....dogs? ;) ) and gone to bed...had someone "break-in" while you were dead asleep and see how you react?

Just curious...I haven't done any of that...I sleep with some of my EDC on the nightstand by me, but usually put away the blades...the chances of someone breaking in and using them on me are greater than me actually being conscious enough to go for the blade BEFORE anything else. But that's just me....
