Us old plumbers, when we are sleeping, keep short barreled, extended magazine, .12 ga. 870 as our bedside knife. I only have a knife on me when I have pants on. With the change in my body shape as I aged, I can only keep pants up with a belt."ONLY" when your awake??!
As a former trucker, I have a belt on 24/7 and 365.25. (along with my Buck 110 or 112)
If I wanted to carry a small fixed blade with beltless shorts. I would wear it in a leather sheath, with a pocket clip, but inside the waste band, and probably at the four o'clock position. With a golf shirt, it would be out of sight and still readily accessible.
