Benchmade 710: A truley classic knife

Call Benchmade. I would say that the Axis pin heads themselves possibly screw into a bar ? They may also be press fit at the factory making them permanent. You should still be able to get the washers out once you remove the pivot and the blade though.

Hey, sorry if this is in the wrong place (BF newbie), but how do I disassemble the axis lock on an older 710? It doesn't have a cutout in the liner to slide it out, and I can't break it down completely to clean the washers without removing it. Thanks!

They look permanent to me. You can get the washers out without removing the axis bar.

If this 710 is like other models, pull the Axis bar back and insert a Q-tip (or at least a section of one) through the slot to keep the bar and springs compressed. Remove the pivot and both blade and washers will slide out. Do your cleaning and reverse the process. I use a toothpick to help align the washers. (So as to not scratch.) Also a drop or two of oil can help keep them (the washers) on the blade long enough to finish reinserting and aligning everything. Then insert the pivot and adjust as you need to. It just takes a little practice.

Thank you, good advice. I'd like to get it back in working order... It's not my favorite knife, but man is it a beautifully engineered piece of work. Silky smooth.

lol on my speed safe knives I smear the torsion bar in Vaseline to lube it and to hold it in place while I put it back together. Has actually worked really well. Could do the same with washers just remember to Q-tip off the excess vaseline when you are done I guess....some thicker lubes like Benchmades Blue Lube do an okay job of making washers stick in place so you can line everything up though...

Aww man, what character that knife has. I'm getting my first 710 in the mail on Monday and can't wait. Traded a ZT 0350 user for it. I hope (and think) I made a good choice!

I alllllmost sold my 710 a couple months ago along with some other BMs. Man, I'm glad I didn't. I never carry it really, but it will get its good use one day. It's truly a classic knife with one of the best blade length to easily pocketable ratios I've ever seen.

I think that's the magic of the 710. It's a big knife that carries small. With no trade off as far as strength or performance.

If I understand your question correctly, the older model Axis had T-studs that were threaded on, w/ no cut out needed into liners to be slipped in, I believe. Here is a bad photo showing a hole in the T-stud where a tool/wrench would be used to install/remove.

Yes, mine has those. So what tool would we use to take them apart?

IIRC, it's a very small hex. But it's been years since I took one of my older 710s apart.

Yup. And the often wrongly maligned mild recurve adds to its performance for some cutting and is easy to sharpen up on something like a Spyderco SharpMaker.

The 710 is def on my wishlist...Craytab, nice Bedlam you have there also. Held one before and couldn't believe how good it felt in hand for being such a large folder.

I do not mean to hijack this thread but it seems the experts on the 710 are all in one place at the same time.
I have a 710 that was offered with the M2hs steel and would love to know if anyone can tell me when, about, it was manufactured. I bought it years ago and have never sharpened it. It has been carried a lot as can be seen by the wear on the clip but I have only cut a plastic strap on my grandson's christmas gift once. I do not remember when I got it but have since added the D2 model and use and carry it a lot. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Frank.

Hi Frank, the date of the 710HS is circa 2000 (first time appearing in the catalog) given a week or two. (;-) Yours is in great shape with only the patina from carry time!

Much appreciated. I really like the shape and feel of the knife. The D2 is my use it to death 710 and the HS is kind of a safe queen.
Thanks again, Frank.
