Benchmade or Spyderco

Depending on your use, interests and budget, you might buy one of their “flagship” folders and compare/contrast. A few from Spyderco might be the Dragonfly, Delica, Endura, PM2. A few from Benchmade might be the Mini-Bugout, Bugout, Griptillian, Mini-Grip, 940-x. (I’m biased toward smaller blades.)

Spydercos and Benchmades make up about 70% of my collection, but I prefer Spyderco by far. I do love the 940 series though, and the Mini-Freek is another recent Benchmade I really like. Happy searching.

Just want to add, Spyderco's customer service seems awesome. I know it was only clip screws, but I had to call about them. I got an answer after only a few rings. I was off the phone in a minute. A couple days later, boom, my clip screws arived. Free.

Maybe it sounds silly, but I really really appreciate that. I have a feeling if I had a real problem with my PM2, they would be very helpful.
You had better luck than I did.
I called about 4 or 5 years ago about a replacement pocket clip and they said it would cost $8.95.
I thought that was nuts considering I was used to Benchmade’s policy.

Both brands have their 'Hall of Famers'.

What is Benchmade's policy?

Until recently it was no charge for pocket clips or screws. Ever.

But, because some people abused the privilege, Benchmade changed their policy. Now it’s up to 5 clips at no charge.

I ordered some clips last year and was told that it had to be the same type of clip that the knife came with from the factory. If I wanted a different clip (deep carry on a Griptilian for example) there would be a five dollar fee.

I have no problem with their new policy. Very reasonable when you compare it to Spyderco.

When it comes to folders, Spyderco wins hands down. I was a BM fan and got tired of improperly heat treated steels, low hardness, pivots falling out, and other QC problems. Plus, BM holds to that ridiculous idea of blade to handle ratio being equal (something no one does on fixed blade, I might add). Spyderco fits better and their blade geometry makes the knives cut far better. Plus, BM ripped off Spydercos designs.

Exactly what did Benchmade steal? The lisenced spydeyhole?
Both companies have great attributes. Enjoy both and don't get wrapped up around brand loyalty

It's a Spyderco (online site only) discount program for
  • Active Duty Military
  • Reservist / National Guard
  • Military Veteran / Retiree
  • Law Enforcement Officer
  • Paramedic / Fire Rescue
  • EMT
  • Medical Professionals
Benchmade has a similar program.

Spyderco, easy.

Better company morally and ethically, better ergonomics, better factory edges and blade geometry, fewer significant QC issues, CQI, Sal Glesser is on the Mount Rushmore of modern folder innovations, more creativity and design variety, more blade steel variety, more variety and durability with locking mechanisms, the company has a soul, you typically don't fall asleep from boredom looking at the new releases for the year, you don't have to deal with uncomfortably loud anodization colors on all of your thumb studs and barrel spacers, Spyderco is more respectful in public, they are better at keeping secrets, your mom likes Spyderco, etc.

I wanted to write almost exactly this, was 45 minutes late.

Also, it is strange that the best Benchmade is made by Hogue :p

Im rocking a Police 4 today, and probably my Grizzly Ridge tomorrow. You might not like either of those per say, but both knives of the 2 different brand cut nice out the box... and just think, you'll have more knives.. you're going going to get one of each brand eventually anyways, if not more. I'm calling it now lol

Yeah, right. Your funny. To non knife people Spyderco is a very radical looking blade. Benchmade is much more conservative in public.

Agreed.

One of the few times I had a "What the hell!?" Type of response for using my knife, it was with my PM2.

A Benchmade Bugout looks much more sheeple friendly than something like a PM2.

Not that I care what sheeple think.

I do care what sheeple think to a certain extent.

I have better things to do with my time than have some idiot sheeple overreact and I end up having a little chat explaining to a LEO that my knife is perfectly legal.

This is partially why I normally avoid assisted knives, ZT products, Cold Steel, subdued blades, and even some Benchmade and Spyderco products.

My choices of knives are pretty conservative. Boring really. Probably my most radical looking knife is Spyderco’s D’Allara 3.

Sure, I get that.

I guess I do too really. I usually carry a sheeple friendly knife for certain situations. Especially when I'm carrying my Ultratech.
Usually the sheeple friendly tool is a SAK or Leatherman Squirt.

It's all about common sense.
