Benchmade pricing seems to have changed

KnifeWorks shipped the order I placed last night for a backup 810 at the old value pricing. Yippee! Now, I have backups for the three Benchmade folders I use most often: 707, 940 and 810.

Just got email that Knifeworks shipped my order too.

Benchmade is never one here. Pretty sad considering sal will answer some questions directly pretty often. With the world relying on technology for most of its business now days, how hard would it be to hire a high school kid to cruise forums and social network like facebook. Try as you might benchmade will not listen.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think that there used to be a BM mod that was here. And now he's not.

And for shit's sake man, would it hurt you guys to answer a damn question here once a quarter or so? You are paying for it, shouldn't you use it? FYI, the BM.com forum is deader than the dead sea. You need to go where the people are, not hope they flock to you.

I'm not expecting them to answer. Seems their strategy would be to ignore anything has happened at this point.

Yes Sir, you are correct in your assertion. That and every other point as well. I guess their ghost mod is a real winner. Aces bro, aces I tell you. lmfao

So the discount is still available on some sites but not others? Sounds like this is not BMs doing, but rather the choice of a few retailers for the holiday season...?

Its possible, just a weird coincidence that over the weekend knifecenter, gpknives, bladehq, etc all removed the discount options which theyve always had, and when I called they said they were no longer allowed to offer the discount.

I ended up placing my order from knifeworks, which shipped today, and I saved $85. Maybe somebody who is a dealer or who knows someone at Benchmade can clarify.

What they appear to be doing now is actually RPM or Resale Price Maintenance. MAP only covered what price you were allowed to advertise at publicly, not the final price at the point of sale, which by law could still be determimed by the Retailer. When I spoke with Knifecenter they made it sound as if they could not give any discounts on MAP or Benchmade would no longer allow them to be a dealer.

With RPM the manufacturer actually dictates what the lowest final price the retailer can sell the product for, and if the retailer refuses to comply the manufacturer may stop doing business with them. This is very close to price fixing by current antitrust laws, but the Supreme Court actually ruled recently on a similar case that this practice was not illegal.
Oakley has been doing this with their sunglasses for as long as I can remember, and I've never heard a peep from people about it. How many folks who are upset that Benchmade is doing this have bought Oakleys?

Boy am I uncomfortable with the buzz on what looks like a business decision by Benchmade to change their pricing structure. I would really like to have someone from the company stop by and explain their reasoning in simple terms. When many of us are holding off on purchases, and catalogs advertising items to buy across the country are spreading their offerings to save money, why would they decide to do this now?

As is, I didn't buy anything this year due to their lack of serious (maybe new and inventive?) offerings, fact is If I never bought another at 40+ models who needs another? Now I haven't locked the barn door, but do have the key in my pocket. This is interesting to read gents...I don't like it very much.
I agree, Joe, that their timing is pretty ridiculous. Right before the holiday buying season??

Not when I already own the SHOT version of the 585-1 in full G-10. M390 or not It's the better knife, less flash.
That "flash" makes the 586 the perfect dress knife. Sturdy, G10, and also dressy enough to not draw alarm.

Benchmade makes a great knife, but it is not so compelling that a strictly-enforced no discount policy would survive in my buying preferences - far from it.
Thee are some of us who are "stuck" buying Benchmades for the most part because we are so bloody left-handed that right-handed liner and frame locks just don't work (me in particular). All my knives are Benchmade knives. I'm fortunate that such an awesome lock as the Axis is high quality and the rest of the knife ends up being high quality. However, if I have to pay $180 for a 940 in aluminum and s30v or $190 or so for a ZT 801 in Ti and a supersteel, I'll force myself to use a framelock even if I lose a finger! I've been so happy with the Axis lock I haven't really looked hard at anything else, but with a 30% price increase, the Manix 2 and Manix 2XL are much closer to finding a place on my knife shelf and in my pocket. I love the Rift, but I can easily replace it with a Manix 2XL with better steel at less cost.

I already have to save to buy about 1 knife per year, and with a price increase such as this, I'll buy used, which won't benefit Benchmade's pocket book. My only other choice is to buy less than 1 per year, which won't benefit Benchmade's pocket book.

Most manufacturers have experimented with this from time to time. Most come to their senses and let the market prevail. Those that don't? - they squeeze the blood out of a few irrational loyalists and the rest of us move on and follow *value* rather than hype.
Unless a store is having a store-wide discount that applies to everything they sell, Oakley will punish retailers for discounting the price of Oakleys. And yet Oakley increases their profits yearly, do they not?

I obviously hope that the discounts at some sites continues as it will make it easier to continue buying BM more often. I'm not going to swear off BM knives no matter what the reason is behind the removal of the discounts. It will however change my buying habits in a couple of ways. First, I will probably buy at my local stores more often as the prices are now either equal or better than MAP. In fact a local store is having a Black Friday sale and discounting all their in-stock BM 20% which puts them as good as KW and BHQ after discounts. The second effect is that I will broaden my horizons and try more knives of different brands. I will not abandon BM but this makes it better timing to branch out. If nothing else it might make me appreciate the value proposition of Benchmades even more.

Okay, so a handful of online retailers are no longer "allowed" to offer discounts, yet some still are offering them. I wonder if the ones who are still offering discounts will no longer be selling BM when their current stock is gone? Maybe someone who works at one of these places could actually (anonymously) disclose the reasons for no longer having discounts.

Yeah, I know they have to have one. Sure, sure thing pal. Having one, and one that does shit, is a horse of another color. This one sucks.

Perhaps if you call Benchmade they can give you an answer and you can share it with us?

This is probably a ploy to get us to order from the places that still have the discount.

It worked too, just got a 810.

I bought that 940 I was wanting just in case...

The more I think about it the more likely this could be the re-sellers. Many of them are having black friday sales, and I doubt many of them can afford to sell their BM's any cheaper than they already do. Sure would be easy to put benchmades on sale tomorrow if the price suddenly rises. Then it can mysteriously go back down after the holidays.

If this is the case, props to those retailers not playing games

I've seen benchmade in here, but they aren't commenting so who knows.

Excited for my 940 either way.

If it were my company I would interject with some explanation on the cost of running a business.

"Blah blah, s30v blade stock went up in price, were getting gouged by our g10 dealer. Labor costs are going up, remember guys we're made in the USA. Sorry guys but we have no choice but to raise our prices to keep the lights on. "

I don't have access to their book keeping. So I can either believe them or blame the economy.

Better then everyone just thinking they are money grabbin.

Being a hidden company doesn't really work in the age of the internet. Up front open discussion with your most loyal customers will go a lot further. Especially when a huge portion of your sales are done online.

Id like to know if it's Benchmade enforcing the no discount or if its just a group of sellers who collectively decided to stop offering it.

If it was Benchmade I'd rather hear them explain how the increase will allow them to make a better product not some lame excuse about costs.

For example if they said they were going to invest in the abilty/time to put a proper edge on their blades that doesn't have uneven bevels and angles and look like it was done on a slab of concrete I'd be OK with paying more.

It was Benchmade's new policy and not the retailers. The one I talked to was less than happy, they did this before the holidays.
