check out these knives before you say BM sucks.

Seriously though. I attribute a lot of these types of statements to people attributing "perfection" to a situation they never really considered. As a person that cares little about centered blades I might accurately state that my blade centering perfectly meets my approval;)

To claim ANY blade is "perfectly" centered is suspicious at best. Sort of like when someone says they "gave it 110%", or this thing is "awesome". Simply put, it is a misuse of the terms.

Very true. A lot of this is subjective depending on what the user expected and perceives.

For clarity, I'm fairly picky and when I say mine have been perfectly centered, its to my naked eye. Granted I didn't get the micrometer out to really check. :D
And I'm talking about out-of-the-box condition, no claim implied after use.

wow, from the sound of this thread it seems like they all suck. not a single manufacturer can get things together and produce a on center, evenly ground blade within a decent price point.

good thing I only buy customs these days and I don't have those problems. (which doesn't count all the kershaws, spydercos, benchmades, tops, bucks, bokers, and schrades that I own that never had any of those problems.)

There is a lot to be said for customs. For the truely picky person it would seem well worth the cost.

Like you, I've been pretty impressed with the general quality of production knifes. I'd add AG Russell to that list, he's been coming out with some outstanding traditonals lately at really decent prices.
Heck (to sort of return to the original topic), even though I've given up on BM, the ones I have are very well done.

Guess I've just been lucky. The 15 or so Spydies I have had no centering problems. Really no problems at all.
Here ya go, as always. How about "so far I always read......" :D

Oh sure, quote the line with the typo.

I spent my career in government and computers and because of that "training" I rarely make absolute statements. I'm conditioned to qualify every comment just be be "safe", even if I'm 100% sure I'm right ;)

I have several Benchmades and I've given two as gifts to friends. They have been excellent quality. Value for money is pretty subjective. I think a basic Griptilian is good value for money for a high-quality pocket knife, made out of a well-known, high-quality steel.

There are thousands of lower cost alternatives to Benchmade, and people choose them every day. I like to spend my knife money on a good quality piece, made in the USA if possible. Benchmade fills the bill very often.

That said, I buy other knives, from other brands, but I have more Benchmades than any other brand.

[[ "... example of some knives that do impress you for the money." ]]

Kershaw IMO makes good knives, and they can be reasonable.

Glad to see someone else commenting on BenchMade's $$. At least in some cases I do think they are overpriced.

YMMV

But for a particular knife you like.... :)

For the money, I'd go with spyderco. Price point is similar, and spyderco just focuses more on fit and finish, and higher end steel. Ive owned two benchmade, and handled a few more here and there, and after use, they always develop blade play, every
time. Benchmade doesn't support owners taking down their knives for cleaning and lubrication, and the one time i did go ahead and take it down anyway, the screw broke clean in half lol. Of course BM offered to fix it, which is great, but just produce a higher quality product, rather then having a good warranty. IMO it's better to pay more and get more, I'm a big Chris Reeve fan, and sold nearly every other knife i own when i picked up an insingo.

Never had any qualms with my Benchmade knives. Of course I actually handle most knives in person before making a purchase or dismissing them. Want a tank of a knife? Try the original Presidio series! I wanted an axis lock folder, checked out the Griptilian and a Mini Presidio. Didn't like the feel of the Grip's handles, so I opted for the Presidio. I don't mind spending a little extra for quality.

For my money I stick with Benchmade, Spyderco and Victorinox for my folders.

While I don't own any Benchmades (although I do have a Griptilian coming to me in the mail), I've handled quite a few at the local knife shop. A fair amount felt fairly sturdy and well-built and they seemed to have a good grind on them, but I've always been hesitant to grab a few due to the price. It seems as though I can get most of the same capabilities (or more) from a Spyderco for about 15% less cost. However, the way I see it, if a design really captures your fancy and the price seems fair to you, then buy all means buy it.

I've got a Griptilian on the way as a means to ease myself into the Benchmade brand and if I have success with it, I'll definitely be buying a 710, although I don't have much experience with D2.

And you can get most of the same capabilities from some S&W, Sanrenmu or any other Chinese knife for a fraction of Spyderco's cost! Think about that! ;)

Yes indeed and just like a Ferrari, a Yugo has a radio, doors, a transmission, an engine and some seats.

People start stupid threads like this for one reason and one reason only, to stir up the shit. Lame subject, you fail.

Sounds like what you're doing. Better if you discuss the topic, not the other members or their motivations.

I think what it boils down to is personal preference... it doesn't really matter that 90% of the people on this forum appreciate Benchmade (myself included), you don't like them and that's that. Design plays a part in the value of a knife (to most people). I love Benchmade but there are only a few of their knives that appeal to me visually. The few models they do make, that I like, I thoroughly enjoy. Labeling a brand as crap because you don't like it is sort of flawed logic. I see it a lot in the gun community where a brand becomes some form of zealot religion. I think many companys and models have different things to offer. Variety is the spice of life.

I completely agree! I like the car analogy: "As long as it gets me from A to B." However, if we want to get into more of the higher-grade steels and start looking into harder-use folders, that's where most of the generic Chinese stuff starts to fall behind.

Maybe when I get some use out of my Griptilian, I won't mind the slightly higher price point quite as much. It's just been a bit tough to make that jump to purchasing the brand.

Yeah, right!
I do not buy Ferrari because they are overpriced! ;)

Heh...touché!

Well said. Some models of Benchmade I won't buy, simply because I don't like the design and other models I buy because I like the design. Price and quality has never been an issue with any Benchmade I own.

No issue with Benchmades I have. They are cheaper at retail then Spyderco knives in South Africa, almost half the price. An Endura is almost the same price as a 710 at stores.
