benchmade sucks?

Apples to apples is not close enough. If BM competitors produced Bob Lum DeJavoo - I would have cared about the price difference. Otherwise - if I like the knife and I like the price - I just buy it without looking at other apples...
But if you like - let's compare. Bob Lum Mini-Dejavoo and, what? Spyderco Chinese Folder? Is that close enough? BM Griptilian and, e-e-e-e- Endura 4? Griptilian has got axis lock and Endura has got a hole in the blade and vertical blade play as any backlock, but OK, very nice knives both. Is BM more pricey, or is that just some ritual saying? ;)

I think you must have stopped reading that paragraph I wrote halfway through. If you read the whole paragraph in context you'll see what you interpreted vs. What I wrote are very different. Cause I'm not comparing chinese made value spydercos to a made in america higher than the value spyderco benchmade? Apples to apples would be more like 154cm, 3.5" blade, liner lock, g-10 scales knife made up imaginary model to make the point..... benchmade vs. The exact same
Specs knife, but a different design made by spyderco or kershaw or whoever. Make sense?

Benchmade are OK. No better than OK. I have had several(roughly eight, maybe more) and they simply do not compare to Spyderco. Not for the price. Spyderco are just better the way they feel, function and endure. I can see BM may have some nice looking designs but I have had too many gripes. Wiggly blades, poor(downright crap!) edges, mediocre ergos whereas the same price range Spyderco far excels. Maybe some of this is just taste but boy to me the difference is profound.

as i sit here with my non wiggly bladed razor sharp griptillian, all i can say is wow, im glad i got one of the .00001% of benchmades that left the factory in good condition.. i think im going to risk the gamble, bet against the odds, and order another benchmade (i love the axis lock what can i say, its spoiled me, i believe all folders should have such a sweet lock)

I have three BMs and like them all. The Dejavoo is so smooth, good looking, and high quality. The bone collector is smooth, I love the axis lock, and it is high quality. The Bedlam is an awesome design but I'm not blown away by the quality compared to the price. I still like the knife but I think opening could be smoother and the fit and finish is, well, black class.

I think you must have stopped reading that paragraph I wrote halfway through. ....
Sorry, I was not actually arguing with your point. I was expanding.

What I mean to say is that comparison does not always make sense. Or not to everybody... For me it does not - because I am not looking for just one knife, so each model has its own value from my point of view. It is not either-or...
So if I want BM Bedlam - what difference does it make for me how much Spiderco Military costs? I do not want Spiderco Military!
So for me personally that statement about BM being pricey compared to... is meaningless.

like the knives, the edge on the blade has to be reprofiled just about every time out of box, but not a huge deal.

Griptilian handle feeling cheap is a mantra by now. So many people feel necessary to repeat it... Like Spyderco Endura for about the same money - oh yea, such a reach texture, such a material... And I have not heard anybody complaining this material breaking or whatever.
Griptilian is a simple utility knife. It does not have to feel any spectacular in my opinion. It just function, it has AXIS lock, good steel on the blade. If you want something extra - just pick something else, plenty of choice!

Welcome to the forums, Subie J!

Many people have mentioned the 'feel' aspect as Poez suggested. I have a half dozen Grips and have been pleased with them all, but I do understand where you are coming from. Price wise, you will do much better on the web. If possible, try handling a 'Rift' before you form any conclusions about BM. Or, you could always take a drive to Lynnwood and check out some SOG folders. :)

They have different classes and basically you get what u pay for! Id be willing to bet theres a Benchmade you could like!! They are great knives!! Own just a few lol

Subie J.

As an answer to your post, the Griptilian is THE basic/intro knife for Benchmade, it's made to be a workhorse, a no frills "git er done" knife.

I'd like for you to try a few of the "better" knives by Benchmade, preferably the Rift, the 710 and please try a satin blade, from the factory the black coating often is on the tang and it can impede the feel of the action.

To tell you what I think of the Grip, my youngest brother is a knife user and every folder he's had has ended up broken... except the Grip I gave him... they are sturdy. The weight factor, before I gifted it to him I filled the scales with epoxy and split shot to give it some heft and deaden the sound it makes when it clacks open or closed.

+1 My thoughts exactly. Trolls gotta troll.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

I actually live about 20 minutes away from SOG. I've always wanted to check out their place but never made time. Maybe next weekend? :D

Just found this thread and had to say yes Benchmade sucks! The lock they use is highly over rated their knives OTB NOT sharp, but above all its the $ its the rolex syndrome all over again your paying for the name not the knife the knife is worth about $20-$30
the rest is all the name. Much like spyderco however You can get an endura 4 new for $60 all day which is 10x better than any benchmade knife. Now I am not a spyderco fan boy they have their probs too just saying shop around there are a lot of knives out there that are a lot better than Benchmade for the $100-$200 your going to spend.

A few things.

Welcome to the forums, member as of 19 minutes ago.
Also, Zombie thread, am I right?
Also, in before the lock.
Also, seems like a new troll is born every minute around here.

Also, you are completely full of shit. Benchmade makes quality products. You are certainly entitled to your opinion but making retarded blanket statements is asinine and unwanted here. If you have had a problem with the Axis lock I'm sure it's an isolated incident and Benchmade would be happy to fix it for you but to say it is "highly overrated" is ridiculous. It remains one of the best locks in modern knife design in terms of function, strength, dexterity and ease of maintenance. I've owned at least 25 different Benchmade knives and have never had an "OTB" sharpness problem, though I'm sure it could happen. Before you dig up 5 year old threads and say stupid things next time take a step back from the keyboard and do a little research.

I think anyone, regardless of their post count, is entitled to have an opinion and state it about knives they have handled or owned. I can certainly understand, after dealing with a few of Benchmade's plastic handled knives, why someone would be less than impressed with Benchmade, and why they'd like to talk about that on knife forum.

The OP got 156 comments on his post, oh wait 157 :) maybe that was the goal. I got nothing out of the post and I guess I didn't real give anything back. I agree with most, what does someone hope to gain by randomly stating "your girlfriend is ugly."

Trolling, trolling.
