Benchmade VS. Spyderco: issue solved

I don't know anyone else who is into knives. I've seen people carry Kershaw, Buck, Sog and a number of cheap S&W, etc. Can't say I recall seeing anyone carry a Benchmade or Spyderco outside of the Boy Scouts when I was younger.

Ah, my BM 630 was designed by an ex-Spydie designer... who stuttered!

BM 630 Skirmish and BM 635BK Mini Skirmish - both S30V Ti framelocks:

My Spydie Dodo CF has their 'copy' of an AXIS-lock. Lots of 'overlap' these days. Hmmm, maybe a collaboration to make their version of a, asbestos suit on, Matrix?

Hmmm, if numbers talk... I have four Spydie knives... and over three dozen Benchmades!

Of which Sal himself said an agreement had been made.

Apparently Spyderco was fine with it and agreed to Benchmade using their trademark without giving credit.
If it was really an issue, they should have protected their trademark not just tossed it aside as a bargaining chip.

After the fact.
I'll just say you don't know the story and leave it at that. I'm not going to speak for Sal, but you don't need to assume on this one.

I would buy several spyderco models if they suddenly all had axis locks. I still need a para 2 and a military. I just don't like liner locks, but I am going to end up with a para soon anyway I think.

Fully aware of that Ken44, thanks.
Not going to get into it either. There's a side to each story.

It would be cool to see a Benchmade Doug Ritter Griptilian blade with a thumb hole, and Spyderco Paramilitary 2 scales with an axis lock. I would try and make an edited picture, but I can't photoshop to save my life lol

I don't think Spyderco is looking for any more publicity. They're doing just fine as is.

Coming to an agreement, (i.e, settling out of court,) is not the same as being "fine with it."

^^^ regardless the issue was resolved...... if spyderco truely had an issue they could have simply fought it or used a BM trade mark design....... i want a 154cm tenacious with a griptiian body & lock after playing with my Tenacious and my friends Mini Grip.

I would like a benchmade presideo handle and axis lock with a pm2 blade and spyder hole. And call it the parasideo.

haha nice,

i would also like to see a couple smaller BM with a spydie wire clip, Idk why but i really like the wire clip design

+1
Also I am not sure what kind of collaboration would attract me. Spyderco is doing great job by themselves. I do not see anything that Spyderco can take from BM to improve performance of their knives.

I have to give a big "thumbs up" to that one.

if that happend, so spyderco has axis lock and benchmade has the hole

If you really think Spyderco "stole" the axis lock with their CBBL lock, then surely you must think Benchmade "stole" their idea for their axis lock from the Blackie Collins Bolt Action lock, no?? Or is taking an objective look at things too much to ask?

As I said not getting into it. Spyderco made a choice.

Yep. They chose not to go bankrupt fighting a company three times their size in court.

Apparently, yes it is asking too much. People who think the Axis and CBB locks are "the same" don't understand how either one works.

They are still trying to settle on the model name.

Spydermade or Benchyderco

Here we go...
There are always choices.
Spyderco's choice to rely on a bad trademark protection scheme to secure the spyderhole backfired. They should have simply allowed the market to utilize the function as is fair to allow for FAIR competition.
Benchmade used to license it from Spyderco and honored their terms when they were told they could no longer do it, do you think that sits well with Benchmade?

Honestly I bet this would be sung to a way different tune if this were in pharmaceuticals.
Imagine brand name companies trademarking medicines once patents expire just so scheme about and secure that product for their company only. Not only that, they refuse to share that trademark.
Now let's say a company decided to bully them to agreement to share this said medicine.
;)

Besides I am sure Spyderco has more than recouped their costs for R&D of the Spyderhole.

I find the fact that so many are pro-Spyderco and anti-Benchmade interesting. I always liked Spyderco, but recently got my first Benchmade. I didn't like how any of their handles felt all that much (and few blade designs appealed to me). But the 940 is raved about, and felt the best of the line to me, so I got it. Yeah, the axis lock is cool mechanically and fun. But apart from the nice aluminum handles I don't see the price difference justified. I haven't used it as much as my Spydercos, so I'm still hoping to be pleasantly surprised.
