Benchmade VS. Spyderco: issue solved

At that time, Spyderco employed 51 people and Benchmade around 200. Spyderco is not nearly as large as people seem to think.

For those who still care about Benchmade and the Spydie hole (which does not include me), here's what Mr. Sal had to say on it: "I can say that Spyderco and Benchmade have an agreement. Sorry, details are confidential. The hole was not stolen by Benchmade . . . ." Link.

I actually think Spyderco could learn something from Benchmade. I liked the Spyderco Bali's, but they don't compare to Benchmade IMHO.

They are both great companies with great designs. Screw a collaboration, let them run the race so we can finish first.

That is true, Benchmade's bali's are quite a few steps up from Spyderco's and quite a few makers.

Exactly.

With that being said, I don't think that a Benchmade/Spyderco collaboration would be totally out of the question.

Would I love to see it happen? Yes

Would I buy it? Maybe

That was in 2006, and I have no idea what was worked out at that time. But it didn't sound like Sal was very happy about a recent Benchmade made with the hole after seeing one posted. We will never know the full story, or at least I sure don't.

I agree with the Bali part, but most of us have no interest in those, and they're not even legal in my state.
IMO, I think Benchmade is the one that could learn something from Spyderco. Mainly in the steel department, and I also like that Spyderco offers many with a FFG.

I have both, and both are good companies IMO.

Honestly I've found Benchmade's HT to be on par or better than Spyderco's, particularly with their higher end stuff.
Benchmade's blade shapes say their MDQ is quite excellent in balancing strength and performance compared to the PM2's weaker blade (tip strength on the PM2 is quite weak, even my Mini Grips are bit stronger).

I think they BOTH can learn something from each other whether it's grinding blades, sharing blade shapes, or sharing Heat treatment data.
And to be honest I find Benchmade's warranty department to be lightyears ahead (they have been more than complacent with all my knives, heavily modified or reassembled. In fact they even lent me a hand on modifications). Truly knife nuts in there.

Broken omega springs would only detract from Spyderco's designs. I don't see the appeal of a Benchmade collab.

I wasn't talking about the HT. I was talking about Spyderco using S30V as their standard steel vs 154cm, and the fact Spyderco gives more options in Steel than any other.

The PM2 and Military were designed to have a thin tip. That gives them alot of distal taper, and is why they slice so well.
They makes knives with a thicker tip, but I prefer a thin tip myself.
I like Benchmade, but would like to see them make more knives with a FFG. Maybe thats just me though.

Good points. That they fregging do, I can't think of a steel they haven't dabbled in that others have.
Well the Paramilitary 2 is considered by Spyderco as a survival knife. For a survival knife to have such a weak tip is counter intuitive to it's also thick blade stock.
I've bent the tip just doing fine whittling of hardwoods.

this is exactly why i love spyderco

Its also is another push for the collab, i would love to see benchmade with some different steels like/of spyderco

I only have one benchmade (I'm not, nor am I aiming to be, a "collector"), but I greatly prefer spyderco's s30v over benchmade's (if my few knives have been exemplary of the companies over all work).
