Cleaning up a nice crusty piece of San Mai that someone was kind enough to forge for me. See if I can make a skinny vest Bowie out of it...
(my pattern has a little kink towards the tip that I'll smooth out, I'm just too lazy to make another pattern)

'kink toward the tip' could actually be the CPK forum motto/mission statement

Yeah. Been watching his work for a while. Only thing is I'm not sure if I like elmax or not.

Funny thing with Elmax: the one steel with lots of very strong / mostly good opinions on the internet, but very little measurements.

I like it for knives that are mostly for cutting … nice edge retention, and tough enough. Welcome change from the now so common M390 which I have chipped in the past. My Elmax knives didn’t chip yet.

Larrin rates it similar to S45vn.

Here is Nathan:

“Elmax is not as stainless as you might think. It has a ton of chrome, but it has a bunch of carbon too so that chrome is not all free chrome. It will rust.

Elmax is a good steel. It combines pretty good edge stability and toughness (for a highly complex high carbide steel) with good wear resistance and corrosion resistance. All the things that S30V tried to be and failed, Elmax did it.

I'm not sure what high carbide stainless I would choose today. Elmax would still be near the top of the list.”

Yeah, I've heard good things. I just have a hard time buying anything other than 3v, cruwear/z-wear, or simpler steels.
