best < $50 edc

If you can, avoid 8cr13mov. It's a good cheap steel, but nowadays there are so many more affordable options with better steels.
Kershaw Leek with Sanvik 14c28n. Otherwise save a few bucks more and get whatever Spyderco or Benchmade you can afford.

Im a big fan of the Enlan EL-01 i just got, super beefy knive and dang well made! Plus i got it for like 19 bucks.

Spyderco Tenacious.

Built nicely well, decent steel, and actually comfortable in the hand.

A bit small though.

^^YUP^^ I find the size nice for EDC. I carried one a lot before I went fully traditional..

i would say cold steel voyager for heavy duty usage or maybe a byrd cara cara for medium task role...i love my byrd knife...long blade cuts great and easy to resharpen!!!the finger choil makes closing the lock back easy and safe...a great beater knife

Victorinox SAK - the Huntsman or Farmer, but my all-time FAVORITE EDC is the Vic Safari model with larger tools/blades, textured nylon handle, and lanyard hole THROUGH the handle, not some cheesey ring - unfortunately no longer made, but still available if you look around.

Skyline is pretty perfect for most light to medium tasks and it carries beautifully. I would avoid the Cryo, but only because the handle is so slick. My all time favorite edc is the Kershaw Junkyard dog; the smaller version can be had for under $50 and the combination of the blade shape and medium size make it a solid choice.

At that price point, I think the hands-down best available is the Cold Steel Voyager. My preferences and my mileage.

Kabar dozier I have several of the popular <50 folders and this is the one in my pocket the most. Thick blade no play. Work friendly.

There's a lot of great suggestions being posted, so I won't add any. I would like to commend the OP on his search for the best knife in a price range he his comfortable with. The hunt is part of the enjoyment. The fun wears off a $500 knife in a hurry, if you have to live on Top Ramen for a month, and thumb it to work.

Fifty bucks ? Go to Walmart and get a Leatherman multi tool. You should be able to wear it most places and you will find at least half a dozen more applications for it, than just a knife blade.

Ontario RAT Model 1 or Model 2 depending on whether you prefer large or small. As to the why, they are near perfect and extremely affordable so you don't have to worry about beating on em, that basically makes em perfect for edc imo.

I agree - or one of the many Kershaws.

The RAT's are rugged and like you say, the RAT1 is decent size. The RAT2 - a little smaller but but still respectable.

I like the Kershaws but would in most situations I would lean towards the RAT's. IMO tougher and bigger than most Kershaws in that price range.

yup like buying a new car. fun wears off real quick but you still continue to make a big payment every month and wish you had gotten a reliable beater instead. :D

He can also look for the 108mm Victorinox Gewehr German Army Knife (also no longer made). It's the same knife with green scales. Another to look for is the Victorinox Mauser. Nearly the same as the Safari and GAK. Just with two main blades.
