Yep, use a low investment spike of some kind. If you have to use a knife then any kind of dagger profile is the ticket for ease of punching into the brain and then removing it again if convenient

add to that some actual bite stopping armor - ie - heavy gauge nylon fabric clothing.... arms & gloves and a hooded jacket and you'd be basically impervious to bites

the stuff already exists, and with most of the population already gone, should be easy/quick to find

why does every walking dead spin off seem to neglect basics like this... I really would enjoy the shows much more (and watch more of them) if they could cover basics like this...
I guess killing off your main cast slowly over time is a better formula??? (like for engagement?... not imho)

am I the only person who can't stand watching shows where every character has an IQ of under 50?

You need something longer to pierce the brain or decapitated head. Small/short knife doesn't work well and you put yourself great risk if you need to go short distant to kill ZOMBIE.
