Have heard it all - for every person who likes a certain knife (Randall 1-7, Ek, even the old Gerbers), there are at least three or more people who bad-mouth that same knife. What's your opinion?

Im personally drawn to Chris Reeves's hollow handled Survival knives.

There is quite a lot of chatter regarding the 'rambo' compartments but to me it makes one hell of a lot of sence. If you loose your pack its not the worst case scenario.

Granted these CR knives come at high prices, but the reputation is high.

well the fatal flaw of the hollow handled knife is quite simple, its nots full tang so its more likely to break, if you want all that survival stuff just put it on the sheath via pockets etc(and i mean the company thats makes the knife to do that instead of hollowing)

Thats true of cheaply made hollow handle knives where the blade is pinned or welded to a piece of pipe for the handle, but you would have a hard time breaking a CR one piece knife at the handle as they are just that - one piece of steel.

Steelfury is right. CR knifes are made out of one piece of steel (handle and blade are formed out of a single billet). They are every bit as strong as any other full tanged handle. I have never ever heard of anyone managing to break one of these knives. As for being cold in the winter......yup, they would be. If you were worried about it (ie your hand freezing to the handle you could wrap the handle in some type of tape).

A hollow steel tube like that handle is probably stonger than any full tang knife.

Appreciate the comments, folks, but I'm looking for a commando knife, not a survival knife. Big difference.

Would you mind explaining the difference then? Because in my opinion a " Commando" would like to be able to survive with his knife. Hence " survival " knife.

Okey-dokey, something specifically designed for the quick, silent, efficient taking of a human life.

I can feel a strider moment coming on.. :D

In all seriousness, you should be looking at some sort of Fairburn sykes pattern combat dagger in my opinion. Its tried tested at least for that very 'role'.

Mission MPT OR MPK. Check'em out. Also Busse Knives. You can't go wrong with either.
Lycosa

Well I would think that a Chris Reeve knife would do a damn good job of cutting someones throat.

What do you make of that A2 Tool Steel used on the them aceofblades?

Id of though field service might be a bit of a pain.

I'd take Rambo over Commando

In Hollywood maybe. . . Or maybe in your own mind. Life isn't Hollywood (and it isn't your mind either). Have talked to lots of Rangers, Seals, etc., not a one of them carries a Rambo knife. Lots of Randalls, Eks, ZMS, and even the odd KA-BAR. But lots of disagreement, even among those folks, about what's best.

I'd say the new Pacific from CRK. So sam who are you are you planning to kill?A knife will make a bloody mess. OJ got away with it. Baseball bat to the head might be better or maybe even a boxcutter. Threads like this make us knife nuts look bad.:jerkit:
