Best concert(s) you've ever been to?

Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana in Portland, Oregon back around 1972...That was a bitchen' concert.

I also used to see/listen to Nirvana here in Aberdeen before they became "famous". (Nirvana was BORN here in Aberdeen.).

...And I saw/heard Metalica at a local (Aberdeen) tavern (Louie's Pub) when the guy here in Aberdeen won the MTV "Motherload" contest a few years ago...(At the time, he was living in the same apartment building that I live at, so Metalica was HERE.).

Best concert: Bob Seger with Michael Bolton opening up for him(yes, Michael Bolton actually used to rock!). I was 5th row on the floor, right dead center. Bolton wasn't bad; in fact, somewhere I have a guitar pick. But, Bob Seger was ON that night! Most bands goof off a little in live shows, and change the songs around a little. Not Bob. This was a great, very professional show.

Other great concerts:
Triumph/Foghat
any Ted Nugent show! (seen him at least a half dozen times, and all rocked)
Three Dog Night(them boys can really sing!)
Journey(before they got all bubble gum ballad-like)
any Santana show! (one of the best guitar players ever!)

Supertramp
U2 in 1982 I saw them play in fountian street church about 300 people
Stones emotional rescue tour..
Smashing pumpkins
The Grifters
Delta 72s
the church
Buddy Guy at his club in Chicago..

The Who/Stevie Ray Vaughn - Houston, TX - 1989
Peter Gabriel - Austin, TX - 1982
Kansas/Cheap Trick - Tulsa, OK - January 4, 1978
Talking Heads - Austin, TX - 1982
Yes - Union Tour - The Woodlands, TX - 1992
Van Halen - The Woodlands - 1993
Allman Brothers/Derek Trucks - Austin, TX - 2003
Genesis - Tulsa, OK - 1984
Pink Floyd - San Antonio, TX - 1994
U2/Pixies - Houston, TX - 1992
Jefferson Starship - Tulsa, OK - 1981
Pearl Jam - Austin, TX - 1995 (don't listen to 'em anymore)
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Austin, TX - 2000

Saw King Crimson in 1995, but believe it or not, I still don't know what to think about it!

I've been to quite a few, but here's ones that stand out:
SRV in Danville Il. in '87 or '88
Alejandro Escovedo at Fitzgerald's on the night that Princess Diana died. 3+ hours and about 4 encores.
Don Walser at Fitzgerald's again.
Ted Nugent at the Pontiac Silverdome... scary audience though! Saw Ted at the Dupage Co. fair about 2 or 3 yrs. ago, he phoned that one in. :(
Robert Earl Keen at Schuba's in Chicago. Saw him at Fitzgerald's about 7-8 yrs. later and he was a total dick.
Just about every Anson Funderberg and the Rockets show I've ever been to.
Every Fred Eaglesmith show I've attended... 4 so far.

I've seen many other fine shows, but these stand out most.

Some I've seen which SUCKED...
Pat Metheny and some jazz dude whose name eludes me... the only show I've ever bitched about getting a refund for.
B.B. King (!) at college... I later found out he was hospitalized soon after the show. BB was definately NOT on that night. Have seen other shows where he rocked.
Van Halen show, circa second album... David Lee Roth absolutely stunk the place up. I thought Eddie was going to beat him to death at one point.

I've only seen 4 concerts; New Guns N' Roses, the White Stripes, The Distillers, and Velvet Revolver.

Barry Manilow's 1996 Sphincterlapse Tour with Johh Tesh. :D

It was a delight. I laughed, I cried, broke a few hearts, but gained a few good friends.

My all time favourite concert was Ozzfest '98 in the UK. It was in Milton Keynes bowl which was actually bowl shaped. This way you could rest on the sides while the boring bands were up there.

However, i did get to see Pantera, Slayer, Soulfly, Fear Factory etc.
Slayer and Pantera were the best though.

Then there was the Pantera concert i went to where they were headlining. That was awesome as well. Although the thing i remember most about it was that there was this dude who asked me to punch him on the body. I think he was high. So i did. Several times.

For sheer theatrics it must be Marilyn Manson. I just loved the crowd. They were just weird. Manson put on a good show.

I also went to see the 2nd last Smashing Pumpkins performance (supposed to be the last but they added 1 more date after that). That was quite good.

1969-Woodstock.
I got there thursday night and left monday and didn't sleep much in between.
Better living through chemistry.

The Who,Grateful Dead,Ten Years After and Santana stand out in my mind.

That was as long ago now as 1934 was then.Sheesh, hope I die before I get old.
:p

1974. Wembley Stadium. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Support acts: The Band and Joni Mitchell!

In no particular order.
Any Slayer show, not my favorite band, but they kill live.
Megadeth, Peace Sells tour, OverKill opened.
Godflesh, same as Slayer.
Vio-lence, Testament at a small club in '88, Philly.
Godflesh, Nocturnus and Napalm Death, some club in NJ.
Faith No More, Angeldust tour.
S.O.D. reunion in Philly.
Alice in Chains, Anthrax, Megadeth and Slayer at the Spectrum.
Exodus reunion at some club last year.
Coroner and Kreator, some club in Delaware.
Kiss reunion tour, the first one.
Black Sabbath reunion with Pantera opening.
Helmet at Monclair University.
Death and Dark Angel, small club in Philly.
Prong and Pantera, is was mine and Dimebag's birthday.
Some no name house band at this blues/jazz club in my town, they were great, don't play there anymore, club changed owners and style of club. I saw these guys a lot and they ruled.
I have seen so many shows, I can't remember them all, these stand out though and I am sure I left a few great ones off.

In no particular order- Each was memorable for its own reasons:

-Springsteen- Hampton, VA (The River tour- 1979-80?)
-Tom Waits- Mule Variations Tour, NYC (2000?) Wow- what a show.
-Gang of Four- (twice) Va Beach, VA (early 80's) Had an imaginary "moment" via eye contact w/ bassist Sara Lee
-Devo- (no kidding- great live band) Premier Theatre, Norfolk, VA (1979)
-Warren Zevon- Boathouse, Norfolk, VA 1987
-Squeeze- " " Jools Holland was sick w/ the Flu, but still did a great show.
-Psychedelic Furs- VA Beach Pavilion 1984
-The Kinks (Bryan Adams was the opener) Hampton, VA (1983) Got hit in the eye w/ a snowball that someone brought in from outside- almost an ugly fight w/ half of the US Navy.
-Ted Nugent, Golden Earring, Sammy Hagar (same bill!!) Norfolk Scope (1978)
-Lords of the New Church, Boathouse, Norfolk, VA (before Stiv Bators died- mid 80's) Friend's band opened for them- Martha Quinn from MTV was there
-Rickie Lee Jones- Passionskirche, Berlin (1995) Came THIS >*< close to getting onto the press list for an interview (show was free) AMAZING concert.
-The Bobs- Passionskirche, Berlin (1995) AWESOME, funny, a capella group. Big fan- hung out & did an interview w/ them for the station I was working for
-The Clash- Wiliamsburg, VA W&M Hall, Combat Rock tour (1982-83?) Incredible energy.
-Ramones- Various shows/venues 7 or 8 times- always great live
-Rolling Stones- Voodoo Lounge Tour- Olympic Statium, Berlin (1995)
-Billy Bragg- free concert w/ Shawn Colvin (!!!) Battery Park, NYC 2000. Got autograph from Billy Bragg. Cool guy.
-Freddie Cole (Nat King Cole's Brother) Roper Theatre, Norfolk, VA (2002) VASTLY underrated jazz guy. Nat didn't get all of the talent in the family.
-Saw Doctors- Norfolk, VA Norva theatre (2002 & 2003) Friend's band opened for them- we closed the bar I work in for the night so we all could go to the show. Excellent pre-show party.

2 of the WORST:
-B-52's- Premiere Theater, Norfolk, VA (1979-80?) Awful show. Just awful. Kid Creole & the Coconuts (opening band) absolutely blew them away.
-Aerosmith "Draw the Line" tour Norfolk Scope (1978-79?) Horrible show- they were so wrecked. They abandoned "Dream On" after about 12 bars & just wandered around arguing w/ each other. Took a 30-min. break mid show.

Yea, I remember this one Gun's N Roses & Skid Row pretty well, Axl had energry he was pullin from somewhere.

Robert Plant and Jimmy Page about 6 or so years ago.

Tori Amos in a tiny personal venue was awesome too!

Korn a couple years ago was great too!

Of these the '95 Clapton concert was by far the best concert I have ever seen and likely will ever see. This was during his "Nothing But The Blues" tour to support his CD "From the Cradle". The concert was at the Dean Smith Dome in Chapel Hill and my Wife and I were on the second row (dead center). We could count EC's nose hairs. He was on fire that night and played with an incredible level of passion, not to mention unparalleled virtuosity. I'll never forget that night.
I was there. I've seen Clapton 3 times, and this was an awesome concert.

Frankly, I'm not surprised that another person from BFC was at the concert given the heavy concentration of NC folks on this site. However, it is still a cool “small worldish” kind of thing to know. In all three EC concerts I've attended he never received an introduction prior to coming out (unlike pretty much every other artist I've seen) but then again, how do you adequately introduce someone who used to be known as "God". All I know is when he walked out on that stage and the spot light hit him I got chill bumps that stayed with me until we were out in the parking lot some two hours later. Man what a night. ;) ;)

That would be Bill Monroe and Tatter Tate at the Bell Cove in Nashville the night before I left Nashville. The moving company had taken everything. It was me and my suitcase and a blanket to sleep on the floor that night before catching my flight out the next morning. So I said, "the heck with this, I'm gonna see Bill Monroe one more time." I called a cab and went to the Bell Cove. What I couldn't know is that Bill Monroe would have his stroke just a few days later and never play publically again. I don't know for sure, but I strongly suspect that I saw Bill Monroe's last public performance.

My top 3 concerts:

3. HFSMas Nutcracker the year they had Puddle of Mudd, Blink182, System of a Down, and Nickleback.

2. Summer Sanitarium with Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, and Metallica (I was probably the only person who paid the extremely high ticket price to see Limp instead of Metallica).

1. The best concert I've ever been to would have to be Aerosmith, with Fuel opening. Aerosmith isn't my favorite band (they're definitely great, just not my favorite), but they put on one heck of a show!

From a lot of the replies, it looks like we have quite a few old-timers (like me), on this Forum. Life was so much simpler then. I've lived in Jersey all my life, and NYC was always a 40 minute train ride away. I used to go to the Filmore East 2 or 3 time a month. When you went to see a show, they had the venues posted for the next 3 or 4 weeks. If you saw someone listed that you wanted to see, you would just go over and buy the tickets before going in. BTW The best seats were like $12.00, and upstairs were around $8.00!!!! The atmosphere inside was so friendly and open. The "atmosphere" was also so smoke filled, I don't how anyone could not wind up stoned, just by breathing. If I brought a date, we'd go to Little Italy for dinner. The entire night counting the train in, dinner with a bottle of wine (18 year old drinking age back then), and the show would cost about $60!!! Now you can't even buy ONE ticket in the cheapest section for that. Peace, Love & Happiness!! What a different world back then!!!

FRANK ZAPPA
It was recorded for a live album Christmas '76.
Lots of instrumentals, Don Pardo intro'd "The Illinois Enema Bandit"
I still haven't figured out how those girls got that great big bong into the place.

Tom Waits in the Beacon. I think it was when 'Blue Valentine' just came out.

The Allmans, at the Beacon, in the mid-90's, loved the acoustic set.

John Mayall, when ever and where ever we saw him. The Bottom Line, Kenny's, My Father's Place. Always a great show.
