Best EDC Spydie?

Sage 2 (both of mine have great locks with no play) if you are fine with a frame lock.
PPT, framlockish liner lock and wonderful fit and finish. Looks slightly less stabby than the PM2;)
Caly 3.5, wonderful knife if you like back locks.
Carbon fiber Stretch, imho even better if you like back locks.

Sage 1. Light, smooth, nice carbonfiber scales, deep wire clip, and it doesn't look scary. I'd say get over your dislike for the liner lock.

I own the Sage 1,2,3 and Caly3 G10 and here's my thoughts:
Sage1 - Perfect EDC, especially with dress pants (black clip), liner-lock easier to close one-handed compared to frame-lock, CF gives just the right amount of traction and resistance when you're pulling it out of your pocket
Sage2 - Great EDC but I keep having to double check it's there after my winter coat pulled it out of my pants one time and it hit the floor (carpet thankfully), the frame-lock on mine is solid, I get a lot of comments from people on this knife compared to my other Spyderco's, the looks and elegance of it are great
Sage3 - Handle a little big for the size of blade, the G10 while great for traction really starts fraying the edges of your pants (and that's with light jeans), love the lock though.
Caly3 - Perfect size for an EDC but again the G10 starts ripping up your pants (the ZDP/CF would be better)

So right now I'm bouncing between the Sage 1 & 2

I have to say the chokwe. Doesn't get enough love.

FFG s30v blade
Ti framelock with g10 on the other side.
An absolute dream to deploy (Especially doing the middle finger flick)
Smooth as butter.
Some may not take too kindly to the blade shape though.

It's not that I have a dislike for them, it's just that I like looking into other options.

Thanks for the info, and yeah right now it's mostly a toss up between Sage 1, and Caly 3. If I do get the Caly 3, I'll be getting the CF/ZDP-189 variety.

I'd like to also give the caly3.5 a shout. Sounds like your hands might be a little bigger but carrying the larger models may be out of the question due to the sheeple factor. The caly 3.5 has some of the most perfect egos I've ever experienced in a folder. Allows for a larger hand to acquire a great grip without needing an overly long handle. When closed the knife gives a less intimidating look but when opened the blade has quite the reach. I swear the model has a 1 to 1 blade to handle ratio. Additionly it's super light, all but disappears in the pocket due to the low slung clip, weighs practically nothing and can be had with a quality VG10 steel and g10 scales. Seems it fits many of your requirements and defeats many of your concerns. Semi sheeple friendly, no frn, no liner lock - yet - comfortable for a medium to larger hand, serious blade (this is the famous mountain lion blade!!) but concealed inside the handle in a stealth like way.

The sage series is excellent; however, if I had one complaint it would be handle length. Sometimes I need just a bit more to grip. Other than that the Sage series is hard to beat.

Good luck either way my friend. Looking forward to seeing what you pick.

+1 on the Caly 3.5 here! As for self-defense, well: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/923982-Spyderco-knife-vs-mountain-lion

I would also say +1 on the Chokwe too, which beats the Caly 3.5 for me now that I bought a deep carry clip from STR. However, it is a little more threatening than the Caly:

I just got a Caly 3 CF ZDP. I love it. I'd love a sage 3 sometime in the future. Right now, my Delica has been getting the most pocket time over the rest (Endura, tenacious, pm2, caly).

Good luck!

That STR clip looks great on the Chokwe, how does it compare to the Spyderco wire clip (e.g. the Sages).

I love deep carry clips, and that was my #1 criteria for my EDC. To that extent, I have or have tried a Lightweight Manix 2, Caly 3, Caly 3.5, Superleaf, Chaparral, Sage 1, and Dragonfly - all wire clips - and the STR clip rides even deeper than any of those. You can see from the picture that the top bend is even higher than the edge of the knife.

For my purposes, that makes it even better than any of the wire clips. The STR clip + the Chokwe length + framelock + thin profile makes it a fantastic combination.

FFG Delica for me too. It's like it ends up in my pocket automatically. If you live in a more rural area, you might want something a little bigger though, like a PM2 maybe, or Manix or any darn Spydie knife that you like and think looks practical, most of them are awesome.

Caly 3 is a good knife, but there are no washers between the liners/blade which will scratch up the tang when opening and closing. Also, it's got a very shallow choil, and it's pinned (no screws). All of that being said, I sold mine, but find myself wanting another one.

I've got a ZDP189 / Carbon Fiber Stretch and it's very nice, but it's also right at the same size as the Para-2.

The Native 5 is absolutely perfect if you appreciate back-locks. It's a touch smaller than the Sage, and it is just about perfect. It's the only knife that kicks out my Para-2 on occasion (very few knives can do that). My Sage 1, Delica, CTS Manix-II, and Superleaf all typically take a back seat to the Para, but this Native is doing a good job of competing for time.

My next Spydie is either going to be another Caly 3 or the Chaparral.

Based on your comments, I'd suggest: Sage 2, Native 5, & the Chokwe. The Chokwe's bigger, but fairly slim for a Spyderco that size.

Good luck on your choice.

FFG Delica, The FRN handles really don't feel that cheap to me, being that it has those stainless liners behind it.
I understand we all have our preferences though. And honestly the one thing that keeps me from staying with a Delica is its lack of prestige. What I mean is even though I have the FFG Delica with a low rider clip, it just doesn't seem high end with those FRN scales.
From a use standpoint though, they are fine and keep the cost down.

Sage 2. Had a Caly 3. Sold it.

Surprised you are wary about blade play with the Sage 2. Haven't heard any complaints.

I haven't met a single spyderco lock back without a tiny bit of vertical play.

Sage 2 is my edc during the week. The FFG and wire clip means it is a great slicer and does not tear the hell out of my work pants.

I really like the design of the Chokwe  But I wish that they would do a Sprint run of those in some other steel other than S30V. That knife would be hell on wheels if it had S90V, D-2 or even VG-10 for that matter. So I'm gonna hold out hoping for it to be made available in another blade steel. The Chokwe is styled so ergonomically that it should be made available in at least 3 other blade steels and it should also be made available in Spyderedge as well. It's a really great design

I am by no means a spyderco expert, I only have about 10... Which is nothing compared to some of the folks on here, compared to the spydercos I have and a lot of other knives I own though, the TI sage is the friendliest EDC.
