In state parks here we can't carry our concealed handguns.
I am ordering one of those tactical walking sticks. I would feel better with a decent knife in addition to the stick.

What is a good, fast opening, tip up carry clipped folder that you would defend your life with?

Spyderco Chinook 3.
Works great for bushcraft too.
One hell of a knife that can be fround for a decent price($150 in Canada, probably less in the States).

Wow, thanks for the suggestions. I've never owned a Spyderco, but my understanding is to deploy you hold the blade and flip the handle open. I am not sure that is my cup of tea.

I've been partial to assisted openers, but I am just afraid of the legality issues now. I noticed my local Walmart has "not available for sale" on the diplays for all the Kerhsaws now. If I ever used one in defense there would be enough legal issues w/out having to worry about that one.

the hole on Spyderco knives can be used just like a thumb stud.

Spyderco Military - doubles as a (proven) self-defense knife and as an unbelievable utility knife. Large ergonomic handle gives you excellent grip in a number of positions. Big 4" blade. The edge geometry is fantastic too when you need to open up some mail or cutting vegetables when you're not defending yourself. ;)

Nice but looks to be tip down only.

Lightweight, strong beefy design, 5" of blade (6" on bextra large voyager clip), tip up carry, long handle, relatively inexpensive.

On Spydercos, the hole is used to open the knife with your thumb (like a thumbstud). the technique (if you want to call it that...) is called a spyder drop, really just an alternative way to open the knife (although i dont think it was initially designed to do that). depending on where you live... assisted opening knives may be legal, research your states laws for clarification (it is still up to the police officers interpretation however). anyways... like others have said... the spyderco police 3, or maybe a waved endura? there are some cool kershaws if you want to look into that (dont know the weight specifics so i cant really give you any exact knives.
peace.
tvg.

I was originally concerned about tip-down on my millie, but the design is wonderful. Dare I say it, I think it is safer than my CQC12 emerson because of its generous blade detent that keeps the blade from opening if you are bouncing (ie jogging).

I would not be turned off by this particular tip-down design. It is designed for active and aggressive use, closed or opened.

The Emerson CQC-12 really looks nice. Is it USA made ?

USA made, and it IS very nice.
Pricey, but tough, and very nice.
If you have the cash and can track one down, go for it.
They're discontinued, so act fast.

on another note a cold steel Ti-lite in either 4" or 6" is a great choice for SD, it has one of the fastest deployments of any knife out there and you have choices, you can use the thumbstup for a fast relatively quiet deployment or the flipper on the back with a little bit of wrist action that gets the blade out FAST and also the quillian on the unsharpened portion of the blade can be used as a lightning fast wave feature. over all its a damn fast knife and comes in the more utility favorable 4 inch blade and then the purely fighting oriented 6 inch blade. either way its a great FAST folder
